So, Morning Mika's Husband took some of his own "executive time" to pen a Washington Post op-ed claiming that Michael Bennet, Colorado's "soft-spoken, white son of the establishment" could be the answer to the Democratic party's prayers. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/michael-bennet-could-be-the-answer-to-the-question-every-democrat-is-asking/2019/02/11/4e90832a-2e2d-11e9-86ab-5d02109aeb01_story.html?utm_term=.acd760d6f119)
Leave it to proud ex-Republican to try to sell us on a conservative white, straight, middle-aged corporatist as the "savior" of the party he loves to preach to but would never join. Michael Bennet gave one good speech (and I'll give it to him--it was a good speech) on the senate floor, and all of a sudden he's supposed to eclipse the likes of Kamala Harris and Sherrod Brown as the one senator who can beat the Idiot Cheetoh because he's...what...so much like him?
Michael Bennet, just like Trump, knows what it's like to have everything handed to him. He only won his senate seat because he got to run as an incumbent, having been appointed by then-Governor Bill Ritter to fill a vacancy. And Ritter only plucked Bennet from the Superintendent of Denver Public Schools job (a position he was appointed to despite having ZERO school administration experience) because he (Ritter) had some personal grudge against the wildly popular Andrew Romanoff, former Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives. And despite Romanoff having clobbered Bennet at the state convention, Bennet ended up winning the primary because President Obama, in a move for which I will never forgive him, endorsed Bennet. (Why on earth Obama put his thumb on the scales in a Democratic Primary, I will NEVER understand.)
As Colorado's senator, Michael Bennet has distinguished himself by...well...not distinguishing himself. Until his famous "Ted Cruz is a big meanie" speech, very few people could have named the state he represents. He serves on three rather quiet committees, and his votes tend to be non-controversial, as are the bills he sponsors. In short, he just doesn't seem to want to make news. Now, that might be Scarborough's idea of presidential material, but I personally want a leader who...leads.
I truly don't intend to knock Bennet. As our senator he has been fine. Just fine. (Personally I'm hoping Andrew Romanoff, who just announced a run for Cory Gardner's seat, will make it to the Senate after all. Romanoff is my idea of a real Democrat.) I just think it's kind of rich that Joe fucking Scarborough thinks he knows what the Democratic party "needs." After all, when Joe served in the People's House--as a Republican--he sponsored a bill to withdraw from the United Nations, voted to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and worked to try to impeach Bill Clinton. And I won't even go into his own little intern scandal. Google it.
Joe seems to think that since Bennet isn't a lefty-liberal, that he can "save" the Democratic party. Well, I think that the 2018 elections proved that the party, and indeed the country, is ready for some loud, proud lefty-ness. And frankly, if we want to beat Cheetoh, the last person we should nominate is a milk-toast, "soft-spoken" centrist. If Joe thinks that's what this country needs, let him convince his own former party to nominate Michael Bennet.

Seems to me no worry. It's clear that long before then our party will have broken apart from the massive schism developing over Israel.

(4,079 posts)Scarborough clearly knows nothing about Colorado politics or about Bennet himself, except for what he read on Wikipedia. And he thinks he can sound like a prescient pundit by reacting to a speech that EVERYONE acknowledged as a very good speech. Honestly, even though I liked what Bennet said, I though his manner and style were awkward and not at all eloquent.
But Scarborough is just a dumb ass.

Morning Joke is so bad I can hardly take it, but sometimes we have it on in the background. CNN is usually old rehash, and too much international intrigue. It's really too bad that there's no one willing to get up early.
I don't see Bennet as even in the running.

Then I actually tuned in to Spectrum 1 where they were giving the real news about my state.
The rise in gas taxes are being used to fix our roads. Instead of car crashes and shootings they actually provide real news from all over the state. Very refreshing .

Joe actually wants Michael Bennett for Democrats? Another trust fund baby?
Speak of the devil, i just clicked on Joe. Michael is insulting Cruz, but that does not make him what we need.
We need a Biden, Brown, Harris, Beto, Warren, etc..

(7,142 posts)Here we go again giving purity tests to our people. First off, I don't watch Joe Scum so I don't get upset listening to a Republican.
The only way we lose in 2020 is if we argue among ourselves, is if we eat our own, is if we adhere to purity tests like Republicans do.
Who the hell cares if a Republican endorses Michael Bennett? I don't. Most of the Democratic candidates are farther to the right to suit me but they are great candidates nevertheless. I don't plan on voting for Bennett and I seriously doubt if he is going to get our nomination, so who gives a shit if Joe Scum endorses him?
Why punish yourself by watching morning right wing cable news? I don't start watching cable news until Nicole Wallace's show, then I skip Chuck Toad, I skip Tweety and my blood pressure does just fine.

(102,562 posts)For God's sakes. I may not want Bennett as a Presidential candidate (I don't), but we have a Senatorial race coming up that allows us to knock off Corey Gardner (R wing asshole).
THAT IS OUR FOCUS. Not destroying an acceptable current DEM who isn't up for reelection until 2022.
WHY DO WE DO THE REPUBLICAN'S WORK FOR THEM?
As a lifelong Coloradoan, I'm saying, knock it the hell off!

(102,562 posts)He has ZERO influence on Democratic politics. Just like when Peter Theil or other conservative RW a'holes write WaPo editorials once a week or so and are promptly ignored as what they are... ignorant RW outlier views and usually poorly written and reasoned, compared to the regular commentators.

(4,079 posts)I actually like him, and I think he gave a great speech on the floor. It doesn't negate the fact that he was handed his seat on a silver platter, and then the whole machine stepped in to make sure he kept it. Nor does it negate that he is a very quiet, unassuming senator who almost never makes news.
I have always liked your posts and always read stuff you put out there. But I truly hope Bennet does not try to run for president. I think we need him to stay right where he is.
Joe, on the other hand, gives morons a bad name. If my rant was attacking anyone, it was him.
hlthe2b
(102,562 posts)Initially, I did think you were unduly harsh re: Bennett, so thanks for clarifying.
I certainly agree with you that he needs to stay in the Senate, rather than run for President, that we'd like to see a more progressive Dem replace Gardner, and that Joe Scarborough, like all the "NEVER TRUMPERS" do NOT have Democrat's best interest at heart.
I guess where we differ is how Bennett got to the Senate and how relevant it is now. Given he has been a reliable vote for Dem policies and against Trump's agenda, I guess that just doesn't matter a lot to me now.
RW viewpoints on who we should nominate are about as valuable as their views on just about any other issue... i.e., not at all. (and that includes the Never Trumpers, IMO)

(4,079 posts)I noticed immediately after the 2018 election he began inching leftward because he knows CO doesn't want a Trump cheerleader. I just hope voters will see through him.
I guess I do hold a grudge regarding Bennet and the whole Romanoff battle. I'll feel much better if Andrew actually takes Gardner's seat. Now that would be beautiful. I won't hold my breath, but it would be beautiful.

(2,515 posts)That Scarborough would still be in Trump's corner if Trump hadn't blown him off. He and Mika gave Trump more free air time than any other pundit (don't quote me on that) and if they didn't it sure felt like it. Then we learn that he was trying to secure loans because his campaign was running out of money. If he had to spend money on airtime and ads like everyone else instead of getting it for free, maybe he would have bowed out. Thanks Joe!.
That last part is a little tongue in cheek, but think about it. Trump would say something outrageous at one of his rallies and the next day they'd have him on the air. Not just them but all the pundits

(10,721 posts)It's the absurd, racist and contradictory "white working class economic anxiety/down with identity politics" bullshit narrative that the right, the media and, sadly, far too many on the left end of the political spectrum (from progressive to centrist) pushed and pushed hard. They're still pushing it. Many on DU have fallen for it.
Right wingers know, whether they admit it or not, that the Republican Party's viability depends upon maintaining racism and sexism. That means that an emphasis on anti-racism and anti-sexism threatens their survival. A diverse and youthful ticket (such as Harris-O'Rourke) that sharply contrasts (in every way) with Trump-Pence is the last thing they want to go up against in 2020.
