I see a bunch of posters on DU with a whole ton of hearts and then numerous with a couple...or none. Every year I dish out some hearts simply because I like to do it. If you are a DUer and have less than two hearts I'd like to give you one. But you have to work (a little) for it.
I love to cook. I'm always open to trying new dishes. Please share with me a family treasure that comes from you (or a loved ones) kitchen that I must try sometime. No recipes, etc. Just an idea for a dish I need to make.

(3,331 posts)Two of my Mom's recipe favorites that I used to love as a kid are Cowboy beans (I named them that) and her never ending Taco salad. (The bowl seemed like it never was going to end!!) And then my all time favorite Mom made dinner was her Salmon filet's breaded in potato flakes and fried in butter. (recipe was from a Northern Californian seafood restaurant on the Pacific Ocean)
I know you didn't say recipe's but as a visual, the Cowboy beans are basically a western style chili consisting of mostly drained Pork and beans in a BBQ, ketchup, mustard, Worcester sauce, other spices type concoction with a browned hamburger and onions meat base. And the Taco salad with the basic taco meat (I like to mix it with fat free refried beans to make me feel better health conscience wise), with the cold ingredients being kidney beans and the other basic taco type ingredients. But two ingredients that make this different are frito's as the chip base and Italian dressing as the the salad dressing.

(4,742 posts)I love baked beans but only if they are not too sweet. I live in Ohio and so many people really brown sugar them to the point of almost sugar. Your recipe sounds more savory which I love. Thanks for sharing and enjoy a heart!

Here is a recipe I love:
3-Ingredient Apple Dump Cake

3/4 cup butter, melted
Steps
1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray.
2 Place chopped apples in pan. Top with dry cake mix, and pour melted butter over top, making sure to cover top with butter as much as you can.
3 Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until bubbly. Serve warm. Enjoy!

(6,133 posts)Fortunately I have a market close by that specializes in it. I buy tabbouleh (sp?) from them and make my chicken kabobs, rice with turmeric, a salad with spinach cukes toms feta, and lay it all out on these restaurant like plates divided in three parts, carefully placed (presentation means a lot), and it is all so good. Middle eastern spices are amazing. If I knew how to download pics id show you the chicken spice and kick ass dishes.

(2,760 posts)I live in Thailand because I can't afford to live in the US in my retirement. I feel so lucky that I have my little mini kitchen so that I can cook my comfort food. I like to eat Thai now and then, but not every day. I bake a lot because I can make what Thai's call "canome" (cookies and cakes) which, being Western is very expensive here. That's what I give for Christmas, as the Thai's love it.
I do a lot of crock-pot cooking because it is simple and easy to do for one person. One of my favorites is North African Tajine.

(4,742 posts)I have a local restaurant here where the couple are from Thailand. I love it. I could probably eat it everyday...at least for awhile. What a great way to share some American baking with them.
I do a lot of crockpot stuff also...especially the roasts with veggies and potatoes. I looked up Tajine. Interesting. Clay pot cooking can be very good. Like paella.
Thanks for sharing!

(1,246 posts)My Italian grandmother was a wonderful cook.
To me, she was like an artist when she cooked.
Her pasta fagioli and of course her sauce, were the best!

(4,742 posts)I've never tried to make pasta fagioli but maybe it is time. I have started occasionally making authentic bolognese which I really love. You just need about 4 to 5 hours of time to stir about every 15 minutes and skim the fat off the top. Thanks for sharing!

(17,984 posts)I make my own version minus the celery and substituting saffron for turmeric. And I'm vegetarian, so I use fake meat. So many variations! But they are all goooooooood!

(17,984 posts)Just because of all the black pepper. But maybe north Africans are tougher than we are?

(2,760 posts)But then I love pepper. We followed it up with a lovely pipe of "kife" and mint tea.
