Roy Blunt says Trump is blocking contractor back pay (from #TrumpShutdown) in gov't funding deal

Trump blocking contractor back pay in gov't funding deal, lawmaker says
Some Republicans point to precedent, saying they've never given back pay to contractors after previous shutdowns.

President Donald Trump is blocking a measure to give back pay to federal contractors affected by last month's government shutdown as part of a bipartisan agreement to avert another federal closure, a Republican lawmaker says.

“I’ve been told the president won’t sign that,” Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., told reporters Wednesday. He added, “I guess federal contractors are different in his view than federal employees."

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers were furloughed or required to work without pay during the spending impasse that led to the 35-day partial shutdown. In past shutdowns, Congress has agreed to provide back pay to government workers, but that generally has not extended to federal contractors.

Blunt surprised. In his civilian life he refused to pay many people he owed money to for work done. Why would he do it now. No surprise here.

Some contractors are deemed essential to keep some functions running, and they would have had to report to work. Since they are paid by their companies, whether they got full, partial, or any overtime pay was dependent on their individual contracts.

When I was a contractor during a shutdown I was called by my boss (from the contracting company) and told to stop doing whatever I was doing at the time and walk away until I got called back. I was not paid for any of the time I was locked out.

And all these Dem contractors realllllly want a wall, or barriers, fences, steel slats, artistically designed whatchacallums and so they don’t care if they get paid, see?

Furloughed employees who worked without pay should be paid.

I’m not so sure contractors should. If they walked off the job and sat home...
