This unfinished hotel in Mississippi was to be the first property in the Trump Organizations planned Scion chain.
In the early months of the Trump administration, with the president no longer running his family business, his eldest sons embarked on a plan to roll out two new hotel lines in dozens of American cities. It reflected the ambitions of the next generation of the company, President Trumps son Eric said at the time.
Now, in a striking reversal, the Trump Organization is no longer pursuing the signature initiative, according to company officials.
Plans for the two hotel chains, Scion and American Idea, are to be shelved indefinitely, most likely for the remainder of the presidency. As a practical matter, that means calling off just one agreement, in Mississipppi, though two years ago the Trump Organization said it had as many as 30 potential deals in the pipeline.
The retrenchment comes as the company faces growing scrutiny from federal prosecutors and congressional investigators, and as a former employee, Michael D. Cohen, heads to prison for multiple crimes. With Democrats now in control of the House of Representatives, any new hotel deals could have provided investigative fodder for critics of the president.
We live in a climate where everything will be used against us, whether by the fake news or by Democrats who are only interested in presidential harassment and wasting everyones time, barraging us with nonsense letters, Eric Trump said in a statement. We already have the greatest properties in the world and if we have to slow down our growth for the time being, we are happy to do it.
We live in a climate where everything will be used against us, said Eric Trump, left, with his brother Donald Trump Jr.

(42,007 posts)Theyre actually useful additions to an area that needs them. Theyre in the Clarksdale area, which has the best Mississippi blues festivals in the world. Ive been to several and its miserable finding a place to stay when thousands of people from all over the world show up. The area has some amazing venues for music that directly feed into the otherwise pretty depressed local economy.
Its also true that Indian Americans own quite a chunk of the hotel business in Mississippi and elsewhere. Its a niche they seem to thrive in.
I dont believe that political atmosphere story for a minute. Or maybe I do. There might be truth to the Oh HELL no im not staying in his hotel among the people likely to use them. I hope so.
On edit: I think theyre still finishing them btw. The Mini-Monsters are just pulling out.
