After Trump's National Emergency Declaration, Legal Scholar Says, Initiate Impeachment 'Immediately'

"All you need is one brave member of the U.S. House of Representatives to meaningfully assert that body's Power of the Purse."

by Julia Conley, staff writer Published on Friday, February 15, 2019 by Common Dreams

While Democrats are preparing to propose a joint resolution challenging President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration in order to obtain funding for a border wall, one legal scholar is among those arguing the time has come to pursue a far more direct and effective method of combating the president's lawlessness: impeachment.

Ahead of Trump's national emergency declaration Friday morning, international law professor Francis Boyle said there is no time to lose.

"This should be initiated immediately," said Boyle. "All you need is one brave member of the U.S. House of Representatives to meaningfully assert that body's Power of the Purse. Trump's indications that he will override that legislative power and the seeming acquiescence by some Democrats is illegitimate and dangerous and subverts a fundamental premise of the Constitution.

There's no limit, not even a double jeopardy concept.

Politically, though, repeatedly trying and failing might not look good.

And to see what excuse McConnell comes up with to prevent the Senate from trying him - which I'm sure he'll do.

Go after Pence first. Once it's been discovered he's neck deep in Russian influence, bring up impeachment charges. Assuming the Senate convicts, that leaves a vacancy in the VP role. Trump would have to nominate a new VP, which MUST be confirmed by BOTH chambers

While that battle is going on, impeach Trump. Assuming the Senate convicts him as well, we can say hello to President Pelosi.

Yes, I know this would never happen but a guy can dream can't he?

Impeach and let the Senate do as it will. If the Senate fails to convict, impeach again in the House. Rinse and repeat until enough GOP vote for conviction. Then do the same to Pence.

The Mueller report is not required. Further Congress investigation is not required. There is enough already to remove Trump and waiting is a waste of time and more damage.

When the GOP has power they will do ANYTHING to stop democrats! For example, vote to repeal the ACA over 50 times knowing it was never going to pass in the Senate!

Trump has done a hundred impeachable offences at least and now he has ripped up the Constitution and wiped his fat ass with it and still we do NOTHING!!!

Its no wonder the GOP sells out the country with no fear because democrats refuse to make them pay any price for it!

Reminder: The House Voted to Repeal Obamacare More Than 50 Times

By TESSA BERENSON March 24, 2017

After a contentious debate Friday, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives canceled a vote on a Republican replacement for the Affordable Care Act.

That came after the House voted to repeal or amend the Affordable Care Act more than 50 times since it was passed in October 2009.

According to a Washington Post analysis, by March 2014 they had already voted on it 54 times, including measures to undo, update to change it. Republicans took control of the House in 2011, and on January 19 of that year they voted on, and passed, a measure to repeal all of the Affordable Care Act. (It was never considered by the Senate).

Donald Trump is violating the Constitution. He is negating our system of government based on the rule of law. He is violating a president’s core responsibility to protect American democracy.

But the threat to American democracy is not just from Trump’s dictatorial moves. And the real threat to American sovereignty is not coming from Trump’s fantasized hordes seeking to cross the Mexican border.

It is coming from a foreign government intent on undermining our democracy by propagating lies, turning Americans against each other, and electing a puppet president.

And that is Putin's strategy to have Pence as a VP...I don't think anyone wants Pence president, I have a feeling that most people believe he would be worst than the orange buffoon, I am one of them, but the strategy is working, no one wants Pence to become President so impeachment is a scary thought.

I’d rather trump completely obliteate gop by 2020 and drag the whole party to the abyss with dems coming on top. Don’t let pence anywhere near real power. National emergency may sound like the lowest point but in the grand scheme of things it’s not the worst. Dems should proceed with investigations against trump though and make sure they are all public.
