R.E.M.'s publisher asks Twitter to remove SOTU video tweeted by Trump over use of the band's song

From CNBC this evening:

The publisher of rock band R.E.M.'s music asked Twitter to remove a satirical video clip containing one of the band's songs that President Donald Trump's account tweeted Friday, CNBC has learned.

The clip, which was first posted by another Twitter user and runs more than two minutes in length, plays audio from R.E.M.'s early-'90s hit single "Everybody Hurts" over excerpts from Trump's Feb. 5 State of the Union address.

R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills took notice, saying that the president had retweeted the video from Twitter account CarpeDonktum, who Mills says created it.

The tweet and video are still there.

Per Huffington Post:
CNBC reported early Saturday that Twitter had disabled the video, at the request of lawyers from Universal Music Publishing Group, which owns the publishing rights to the song. The meme’s creator called the move “censorship.”

Multiple musicians and groups have criticized Trump for using their songs without permission at his campaign rallies — including The Rolling Stones, Rihanna, Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith.

R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe himself, in 2015, also instructed Trump to “not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign.”

The legal video of the song is posted inside the HuffPo article.
