For the last four years, Bailey Brazzel has gone to Carver Tax Service in Russiaville, Indiana to have her taxes done by Nancy Fivecoate, who runs the business.
That changed this year when Brazzel showed up with her wife, Samantha, on Tuesday. The two were married in Peru in July and were filing their taxes jointly for the first time.
When Fivecoate realized they were a gay married couple, she refused to do their taxes civilly and matter-of-factly citing her religious beliefs, and recommended another tax service business which would work with them.
At first we thought she was kidding, Brazzel said. But when she started talking about the Bible, we knew she was serious and I was completely shocked.
Brazzel, who works at the FCA plant in Tipton, said shes been openly gay for years and never felt discriminated against because of her sexual orientation. That held true after she married Samantha last year.

(16,867 posts)I hope everybody in town gets their taxes done by her competitors. I probably wouldn't sue if I was in that situation, but I would support anyone who decided to do so. It's just so ridiculous, and I'm sick of people using their fucked up religions as an excuse to be assholes to others.

(6,810 posts)Show me where in the Bible God says taxes are between a man and a woman. Your job *is not* to marry them, that already happened without you thank you very much. Your job is to help them fulfill a legal obligation to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's.
