Martin was a veteran assemblyman at the century-old valve plant. Law enforcement sources told the ABC7 I-Team he was summoned to a meeting room where he was told he was being fired. He responded with a pistol, opening fire on the executives in the room, and then took his anger to the plant floor where dozens of his coworkers were still on the lines.

It seems too common that fired employees start shooting and killing. It used to be that, at least with "white collar" terminations, the employee was escorted by security to his/her office to clear it and than out the door.
I think that security, armed, sadly, has to be present these days when an employee is fired.
Oh, and, perhaps, metal detectors at entrances. No guns policy.

Bet that would put all these shootings to a screeching halt.

(47,599 posts)And at least post a note that guns are prohibited. I know when Minnesota allowed individuals to carry gun, yes, all the libraries, and churches posted signs prohibited guns on the premises.
And I think that someplace, Texas, maybe? it was ruled that such prohibitions were illegals..
Would you say this if a loved one were a victim of such events?

(25,929 posts)And I believe there's more than one place that can't prohibit guns, although I'm not entirely certain and don't care to be bothered to try to research it.
But anyone who supports the current gun laws is not entitled to be shocked or even more than mildly surprised every time a new shooting occurs. Nor be surprised when a toddler finds a gun in Mom's purse and manages to shoot her. Or when a 7 year old finds an unsecured gun in a nightstand and shoots his younger sister. And so on.
It's so peculiar that these things don't occur in other countries. I can't begin to imagine what they are doing different.

Days after he got the weapon, he applied for a concealed carry permit. "During the finger printing and background process, it was discovered that he had a felony conviction for aggravated assault out of Mississippi," Ziman said.
"It should be noted that this conviction would not necessarily have shown up on a criminal background check conducted for a FOID card," she said. "Once this felony conviction was discovered, the offender's conceal and carry permit was rejected and his FOID Card was revoked by the Illinois state police."
Speaking later at the same press conference, Ziman said, "Absolutely, he was not supposed to be in possession of a firearm."
He had faced charges including domestic battery-related counts.

Seems he should have had to turn over his firearm in 2014.

(50,601 posts)Does it matter though? The people killed in this incident are just as dead as the ones who died in Aurora, CO.

(3,220 posts)...I heard this is the 39th mass-shooting so far this year in the U.S.
...very sad...
...we need a wall...a big, beautiful, concrete wall between us and the NRA...when are we going to get serious and pass sensible guns laws in this country?
...the shooter had a felony record and wasn't supposed to have access to firearms...he was supposed to turn his weapons in...he no longer had a valid Illinois FOID card...
...someone dropped the ball...someone needs to take current gun laws more seriously...if someone did, would it have made a difference?
...with hundreds of millions of guns out there, who knows...I'm a gun owner willing to tolerate greater gun regulation in order to reduce this senseless gun violence and slaughter...so far, thousands of innocent women, children and old people being slaughtered doesn't seem to phase the public or our elected official into meaningful action...
...gun violence and the slaughter of the innocent has become accepted as a normal weekly occurrence...very, very, sad
...face it, too many Americans love their firearms more than human life...and that's the saddest part of all...how many more must die?
...too many...
