Personally, I agree with those that say political damage should not weigh into their decision. They all took an oath to defend the Constitution.
Heather McGhee, on MSNBC this morning addressed this question. She believed it would be more damaging for Democrats if they did not impeach. There is just too much to ignore.
It is a constitutional responsibility.

(30,788 posts)This is not like the Clinton impeachment. That was political, and everyone knew it.
If nothing else, it would keep 45 so busy roaring around and tweeting that he would not be doing much other damage.
It is time to stop checking which way the political winds are blowing and do the right and moral thing.

(328 posts)both to the Democrats and to the Country. Before we can usefully talk of impeachment is after Mueller's report is released and we see if enough Senate Republicans are ready to agree that Trump should be convicted and removed from office. To impeach without the Senate willing to convict will only strengthen Trump because he and his acolytes will spin this as not guilty.

(5,951 posts)Impeachment is not for improving the prospects of a political party. Impeachment is a remedy for the commission of crimes - serious crimes - by a president.
Your local police should be enforcing the law uniformly, without weighing the question of whether or not it benefits them politically. The same must be done on the federal level.

(4,131 posts)We should not expect the senate to convict at all. It simply isnt going to happen barring some massive change in the political climate.
We do our job, highlight the fact that they dont do theirs, and attempt to win 2020 despite inevitable Russian meddling, voter suppression and right wing propaganda.

(3,022 posts)you better kill him. Speaker Pelosi is the best vote counter in politics. She will not bring impeachment charges without having the votes in the Senate.

The reality is, if there are no consequences to a president's actions, the next Republican president will bring a shovel in order to lower the bar.

This crookedness must be stopped forever, and impeachment is the proper method to start such actions. Once he is out of office, the trials can begin in criminal cases where the GOP must be held accountable for their support of DFT and his insane pResidency.

(8,936 posts)presidential elections. Any information they get will likely come through their local TV stations and 6:30 PM national news on ABC, NBC, or CBS. And my guess is that through that reporting we can expect them to be poisoned with anti-impeachment propaganda. So I would expect to lose the majority of that vote if dems impeach Trump.
Truly "independent" voters who follow politics is hard for me to say. I don't think there are really that many of them, because most people who tell me they are "independent" is meaningless. They still lean lean left or right and most of the time its not even a lean. To listen to them talk they might as well join the party they always vote with. I would lump those independents in with everyone else who will fall in line with their party's politics, regardless of whether dems impeach him or not.
That said, I'm not certain there is enough to swing the election, but my guess is impeachment favors Republicans and would be more politically damaging to us. But if we have clear evidence after the investigation that he committed high crimes and misdemeanors and didn't impeach him, it may end up being more damaging not to impeach him. So, a "lose either way" situation. Bottom line for me is I want us to do our duty if the situation demands it.

Run the same drill on Pence. May want to dip into the USSC too.
No need for more reports, investigations, plea bargains, or prosecutions.
Stop the damage.
