As a lifelong attractive bachelor who has no children and is not gay, I see where he is coming from, I have had the "gay" stuff thrown at me. When a person has a certain profile and does not have someone of the opposite sex involved in their life, the "gay" rumors start being whispered. I have been the victim of that stuff endlessly and think that it is reprehensible. For whatever their reason, some people just choose not to be married or involved with someone.

It’s about someone in a position of power in a party that actively opposes equal rights for lgtbq people being a closeted gay man. I dunno if the long-standing rumors are true, but if they are it’s next level messed up. Not because of being gay, but because someone who should know better and is in a position of power instead enables policies that hurt other people in the lgtbq community. Also that someone that closeted would be very vulnerable to blackmail.
