Yeah, I'm about to give up. There are plenty of things to be outraged about without turning a non-story into one, but I don't think people are making it to the tweet (the link's broken, which doesn't help), much less the actual story.

Unless we're going to dig up JFK, this seems to be much ado about nothing.

It also says that a Russian-made link has been there since 1963, so it's not as though this is something Trump/Putin had installed. Seems to be much ado about nothing, IMO.

"A direct link between the Kremlin and the White House became operational on Aug. 30, 1963, a year after the Cuban missile crisis that had almost led to nuclear war. The teletype was replaced by fax machines and, in the past decade, computer communications."

(snip)

“In all its years of existence, the direct line uses only Russian-made equipment,” the representative said without elaborating.

C'mon, people. Don't go all crazy with this stuff. We have been using Russian Crypto gear, and they ours, for secure communications over the so-called "hot line" at least since the early 80's, when I was assigned to the White House Communications Agency and worked on that system. There are plenty of safeguards put into place by both sides.

IIRC, our own Mineral Man had a bit of background in this field and can maybe verify from his experience.

there were teletype terminals built in and provided by Russia. In those days the messages were sent via teletype in the sender's native language and translated at the distant end. So we had to have teleprinters that could print the Cyrillic alphabet. And we sent them teleprinters that printed our alphabet. Again, in those days a test message was sent every hour. Odd hours by one side and even hours by the other. IIRC encryption at that time was via a Swiss device that utilized one-time pads. But it's been a few years and the details get a little fuzzy.

Thanks for the further detail. It doesn't surprise me that we sourced theirs and they sourced ours. That makes sense, really. Each side would want to make sure that the translation process on the other end was accurate.

complete secrecy about his communications, it's a question concerning national security, even as the equipment's been around much longer than anyone here knew.

And why is that.

Our security doesn't seem to exist anymore. Because of the way 45 ignores it.

No need for congressional oversight, then?

I don's expect you to be up-to-date on the situation, but if you can speculate, that would help a bit.

God, this is weird AF.

But, Trump uses this encryption and secure communications link specifically to prevent U.S. Intelligence from listening to his conversations with Putin. The same way he speaks to Vladimir without anyone else present, never divulges the content and confiscates any notes.

and our end has been Russia-sourced for 55 years.

So, yes, that would qualify as historical.

Trump may not be using it in the same manner as other presidents (we don't actually know), but it's not new.

If it's been there for 55 years, there's clearly a reason for it (as others have noted in this thread), and it's clearly not an issue or Clinton or Obama would have had it removed or replaced. According to the article, the current version of the link has been there for roughly a decade.
