then the open jubilation expressed by much of this nation will rankle not just you but likely the world. It will be one of the most ghoulish displays America has exhibited in a long history of such things.
EDIT TO ADD: The first dozen or so responses to this post are trying way too hard to find something that isn't here. This isn't a discussion about RBG's actions or decisions in any form but simply the anticipation as to the craven behavior that will undoubtedly be shown by the right wing should she expire during the Trump administration. That's all.
It's not about her. It's about them and their continual lowering of the bar. The current round of Draconian and preposterous state laws regarding women's rights to choose are a vision into the fervency that will cause America's id to even further disgust other nations.

(40,248 posts)I think she was selfish. She didnt want to give up being on the SC. It is a very special life these justices live. I feel she put herself before the country.
Skittles
(153,321 posts)there's a lot to admire about her but she should have stepped down by now - I am tired of the endless fawning
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)She should have understood her role and the importance of that seat. Had she stepped down shortly into 2013, there's very little chance that seat is at risk of flipping to a conservative.
Now we just gotta hope she can make it two years - if not longer.

(23,905 posts)This is what McConnell established when SCJ Scalia died in 2016 leaving open a vacancy that Trump filled in 2017 with Neil Gorsch. Democrats should stand firm in resisting any attempt of the Senate trying to fill a vacancy in 2020. If McConnell ignores his own rule it will be so very transparent what a crook and thief he is for all of America to see.

madaboutharry
(40,248 posts)No one is disrespecting her or her legacy on the court. But it can not be denied that she was not thinking about the future of the country. She was being selfish by refusing to step down during a time when a liberal seat on the court could have been secured for many decades to come. if she had stepped down at the beginning of President Obama's second term things would not be as precarious as they are now. That is a fact.

(9,500 posts)You are betting Mitch McConnel would not have blocked a replacement.
While Democrats held the Senate Majority until 2014, we were still operating with filibusters could block SC nominees.

Paybacks a bitch only if you are in a place that you can deliver the payback. Mitch and Republicans are fixing the rules so that they will never be held to account.

I didn't agree with people like George H. W. or Barbara Bush, or John McCain but I didn't celebrate their demise.
I couldn't stand Ronald and Nancy Reagan but I didn't "celebrate" their deaths. It just conjured my contempt for them.
The depths to which so many have sunk now in following the example of Trump ensures the "happy feet" would break out for the discussed scenario.

(42,009 posts)I mean that literally. Take it from an old shrink. The brain produces the same stress chemicals with strongly imagined suffering (when you believe it, rational or not) as it does with real suffering. It lowers the threshold for anxiety, interferes with learning, overwhelms coping mechanisms and so interferes with relationships. They become narrow, survival-focused, and age the body and brain considerably.
The need to post something like this might indicate youre already there and are looking for communication and reinforcement to help your particular way of coping. Theres nothing at ALL to feel bad about with that. I do it. Everyone does to varying degrees. But contrary to what we believe, it hurts far more than it helps.
Theyre giving us enough real trauma. We have to hold onto hope and use all the power we have. Hang in there! ❤️ (And I know this sounds preachy but I cant do it any better.)
misanthrope
(7,436 posts)Once again, what i said is not about Ginsberg in any fashion. No anxiety from thoughts of her demise, no regrets or nail-baiting. We all die and few times are those deaths opportune.
No sweat. Just life. C'est la vie. "Ask not for whom the bell tolls" and all.
It. Is. Solely. About. The. Craven. Display. To. Be. Shown.
In casual parlance, "those pricks are really going to show their asses to world if RBG's death allows Trump to pick a justice." If anything, I find it darkly humorous so many won't be able to prevent themselves from revealing their character to a shocked globe. Look at the trendsetters for their behavior: Trump and McConnell. The acolytes will follow suit, then attempt to rationalize it by falling back on their ostensibly religious beliefs. They can't avoid it.
Let 'em dance and gloat. The more the better. The perversity of them ruining their own reputations will be amusing to me. Highly. Let's call it, "just rewards."
My "need to post something like this" was for others who able to find dark humor in such scenarios. Life is too short not to laugh.
