Stephanie Wilkinson is the co-owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Va.
Your so-called business is in jeopardy. Rest assured this is not a threat but simply a warning that predicts your downfall. .?.?. When your treasonist hypocrite lowlife Obama took our nation into despair (for 8 yrs) we didnt do or say the things you do. Get over it, before its too late! BTW, there are a lot more of us than there are of you.
Ive been getting hate mail for almost a year now, ever since I asked White House press secretary Sarah Sanders to leave my Lexington, Va., restaurant, the Red Hen, last June.
At the time, the country was in turmoil over the Trump administrations heinous practice of separating children from their parents at our southern border. In our tiny 26-seat restaurant, the horror felt simultaneously immediate and far away.

When we opened after a 10-day hiatus, our dining room was full. In the following weeks, people who had never been to the Shenandoah Valley traveled out of their way to eat with us. Hundreds of orders for our Red Hen spice blend poured in. And the love spread far beyond our door, as supporters sent thousands of dollars in donations in our honor to our local food pantry, our domestic violence shelter and first responders.
After nearly a year, Im happy to say that business is still good. Better than good, actually. And besides the boost to our area charities, our towns hospitality and sales revenue have gone up, too.

(1,279 posts)and refusing service to any one of a different color? DUers don't have to eat at a Chick-Fil-A but I have never heard of a gay couple being refused service. I do not believe that a business that is doing business with the public has a right to refuse service based on religion, color, gender or politics. I put in politics because it is like religion, a choice.

(7,286 posts)I think the distinction here is that you are not refusing service to all of the group, just their most visible face. (whom just happened to be defending putting kids in cages at the time, perhaps your other customers would not like that spoiling their meals.)
The other thing is: refusing service could cost you your business or your safety, but that did not happen.
The point of the editorial is that her business is fine, so no harm no foul. Sarah went somewhere else to eat

(15,307 posts)The staff went to the owner and said they were not comfortable serving SHS and her family. The owner politely asked them to leave and the Sanders' did. I suppose if they'd said they intended to stay, they would have been served.

(17,575 posts)"Any one who votes for the opposition party" wasn't being refused service. It's a false equivalence.
An individual was refused service, because her work in the Trump administration negatively impacted her employees. She was NOT turned away for being a member of a marginalized community.
No laws protect people who make their living by apologizing for the authoritarian tendencies of former reality TV stars who now hold high office. Unlike her targets, Sarah can simply walk away. She is not required to be a spokesperson for authoritarianism. If she quit tomorrow, she could walk into a cushy job elsewhere.

It's like refusing service if someone walked in wearing swastika's or Klan robes.

(37,748 posts)Refusing service to an individual predicated wholly on her own personality and actions is not "refusing service to any one who votes for the opposition party.
That's the relevant and critical difference.
But you won't allow yourself either the nuance or the context to perceive that.
And what your belief is in regards to lawful vs unlawful discrimination is irrelevant to both the law and to the restaurant owner's actions.

(6,624 posts)Lying to the American people is a behavioral choice, it's different than characteristics you're born with (like skin color) or matters of faith (like religion).
I would say Sanders was refused service because of her objectionable behavior, not because of her political party, religion, or skin color.

(27,864 posts)This whole thing made me really uncomfortable. If you don't like when someone won't serve or cater to liberals, then you can't think it's okay when someone won't serve conservatives. I don't like Sarah Huckabee Sanders either, but she has a right to go out in public with her family. As does the gay, mixed-race family who lives next door.

In this context, the restaurant owner and SHS came to a mutual agreement, politely and without rancor. No violence, no confrontation.
Yet the restaurant owner received threats of violence and hate from republicans. And messages of hope and support from Democrats
AND YOU are some claiming we are AS BAD as them. Really? Sheer fucking ignorance

Sure you will get a lot of hate mail. A surge of threats. Even perhaps some actual dangerous attempts at harm at first. Fox News will be screaming louder than usual.
But the longer time goes on if they go ahead, and begin the process to kick Trump out of the restaurant (impeach the bastard) , the more the public becomes aware through access of information that an impeachment hearing would garner, will eventually restore the truth, dignity, and "success" of the White House.
