House Democrats are considering a new idea to pressure the Trump administration to comply with their subpoenas. The idea is to use the appropriations process as leverage and threaten to withhold funding until they get the documents and testimony theyve requested, Axios reports.
Its a move that has a high risk of failure, since appropriations bills have to be approved by a Republican-held Senate and signed by the president. But given the Trump administrations determination to resist all of the Democrats oversight efforts, and the prospect that court fights could take years, theyre being forced to consider every tool they might have.
Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee are writing the bills that will fund the federal government for the next fiscal year including the ones that will fund the Justice Department and the Treasury Department, two of the departments that have been resisting subpoenas.

(296 posts)the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi in particular, can use the Congressional jail on people that do not answer their subpoenas. Why do they not just do that? Whether it is the Sheriffs Department or the FBI, they should have law enforcement with them when delivering the subpoenas. If they refuse, handcuff them and take them to jail. Period. Start the daily fines and just see what progresses from there. The Republicans will keep stalling and pushing back until they are confronted with something more than words. We cannot let them keep ducking the issues and flaunting the law. And this is the law.
