Rather than throwing the book at these scumbags, I think they should serve a more ironic punishment of having to work in the cancer ward of the local children's hospital and tending to some of the worst cases imaginable. That way they can see for themselves the severity of the disease they were mocking.

Rather than punish them by putting them in the slammer - that won't do anything, punish them by making them clean up bile, vomit, shit and other bodily fluids. That would be an appropriate punishment.
