(70,674 posts).... overwhelming and staying loyal to Trump is toxic to their futures but please remember
that many of them took Russian money and are well aware of "the miracles" of our electronic
voting machines.

(4,066 posts)They're getting everything they want right now. Pence has an agenda of his own. He's an experienced politician. He'd start pushing his Christo-Fascist agenda, which is unpopular.
Pence is not good for them. Having him there is not a plus.

(5,740 posts)The yea votes to impeach would leave them to be canabalized by either primary challengers or low voter turnouts in 2020.

(57,656 posts)in their heart of hearts they would love to have Trump impeached, except for those like Mitch McConnell who are making big bucks out of a Trump Administration. If it was a secret vote and they could maintain a plausible deniability of complicity, then they could have Pence, a not very bright but passive machine politician.

(2,025 posts)The GOP would impeach Trump and move on with Pence. As someone implied above, if Trump could be impeached with a secret vote, he'd be gone already.
But as time moves on, and certain things have not occurred, I can't help but think that Mueller uncovered the fact that dozens upon dozens of GOP Congress members have taken Russian money and "the old guard" got together and decided the only way to save the GOP is to put their arm around Trump and Putin and cover it all up(and the "old guard" told Barr he would be the AG to do it). I know I and others have hypothesized that Trump "has dirt" on people like Graham, but that doesn't explain why virtually nobody will stand up to him - and certainly doesn't explain why the GOP can't simply stand up to in "in numbers". His "base" wouldn't matter if 75% of the GOP said "he must go, sorry". So as much as I don't want to believe it, I think they all banded together to prevent the disclosure of the Russia money/GOP connection.

(11,606 posts)If the truth is ever revealed, it will likely show pervasive Russian infiltration into a very high number of Republicans.

(11,760 posts)If Trump is removed, Pence is a lame duck going in. His role in the whole Russia fiasco has not received much scrutiny, so there is that, also, there will be such uproar within the GOP that they will be too disorganized to really do anything. Pence will be insignificant in his maybe 18 month stint as president.
That said, the GOP will not vote to remove Trump from office UNLESS, it means that they will be taken out along with him. They only do things to save their own skin. That is the only reason they really ever act anymore.
Justin Amash is an aberration of what the GOP is now and he is paying the price for it.

(103,856 posts)Pence would have had 3+ years of relatively peaceful rule and would have been a shoo-in for reelection ( if the normals came back into the fold). They would have still gotten their precious judges..
They need to cozy up to the racists and only Trumpster can fire them up. They were too scared to do it.. a bunch of whiney crybabies...Pence is day old oatmeal

(11,949 posts)But Trump is now the party. The will live or die by him.
His base will walk back into their hillbilly churches and forgo politics the minute he is gone.
