President Donald Trumps new $16 billion aid package for farmers raises the federal governments bill for the trade war but isnt easing anyones concerns about damage to the U.S. economy.
Farmers would prefer a resumption of normal trade over government handouts. Several farm-state lawmakers say the payments are too meager. And the money risks distorting agriculture markets.
What do farmers want? They want trade, said Beth Ford, chief executive officer of Minnesota-based agriculture cooperative Land OLakes Inc., before the White House released details of the plan. Nobody wants a payment.
Democratic Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota derided the administrations trade assistance in a Bloomberg TV interview as a little Band-Aid that wont take care of the problem.

(31,261 posts)Look in your frig or pantry at the stuff you use for most meals. All the stuff that I routinely use is from imported produce or fruit. The corn, soybean and corn products that I use are domestic, but they make up maybe 2% of my use over a month. We can easily import enough wheat, corn and soybeans to meet the needs of city people, likely much less expensively than yearly farm supports, the only reason not to is national security, but if farmers are willing to support a Russian stooge in the White House and among republicans in Congress, then we have already given up national security.

The more famers hurt, the more bankruptcies, the more land will be bought up by the corporations in the long run.
