Watching Trump and his minions destroy everything good about this nation has me absolutely devastated. Im thinking of my grandpa, who fought the fascists in WWII and how he must be rolling in his grave at whats happening to this country. I just try and keep my faith that congressional Democrats are doing all they can and are getting all their ducks in a row before we can impeach the asshole. I have to believe that justice will eventually prevail.

(2,279 posts)Over the last two years, Ive lost some of my faith in the country and many of its citizens. Its hard to believe how far weve fallen. Bush Jr was pretty bad too but nothing like this guy.

(11,691 posts)They ranged from very liberal to conservative, but I doubt any of them would be happy with what's going on right now. Both my grandfather's fought in WW2. My maternal grandfather was in the German Army but not by choice. He hated Hitler with a passion and had great admiration for Americans. He came to the US in 1953 with his wife and three young children and they became naturalized citizens in the late 50's. They had three more after they came here. Seeing the current state of this country would've broken his heart. I think the world has lost its damn mind.

(65 posts)My father was proud to kill Nazis in WW2 and It was our government policy and should be again. I'm glad he is not here to see how far America has fallen. Many of his friends died fighting facism and now we have a president that says some Nazis are fine people. I grit my teeth. Fuck.

(102,580 posts)They would NEVER say they were "proud to kill Nazis (or anyone)"... I am certain they did, but it was part of their duty and killing is not something they would freely discuss--especially so cavalierly. They would be highly offended at referring to their service in that way.
While I agree with your points that they would be deeply distressed at an American President defending authoritarianism, racism, fascism and yes, Nazis, I felt the need to address your earlier reference on their behalf and that of many like-minded of their generation. They served with honor and distinction--and humility--but never losing their humanity.
