https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-may-back-brexit-in-second-referendum-campaign-says-shami-chakrabarti_uk_5cef8813e4b00cfa19662138Labour may not campaign for Remain in a second Brexit referendum, Shami Chakrabarti has said.
In comments likely to anger the partys strongly pro-EU membership, she told the BBCs Today programme that a fresh vote would be a reluctant means of breaking a deadlock.
Asked if Labour would support Remain, she said: That would be for the party to decide in a general election.
The shadow attorney general said the party could instead ask voters to get behind a Labour Brexit deal.

(5,559 posts)1. The Brexit party's showing in the EU election had them terrified
We look at 32%,compare against 50% and shrug it off as low support.
Brits look at 32%, and compare it to the 20% of the next highest party, and get alarmed. If last week was a UK general election, the Brexit party would have a massive majority thanks to the first-past-the-post system.

It's crazy that Remain polls ~50% and has no national party representing it

(5,559 posts)3. No, they wouldn't. Brexit Party would have a huge majority as the elections are run differently
British general elections do not award proportionally, only the MEP election is proportionally awarded. Because the opposition is so fragmented, the Brexit party would end up with over 400 of the ~650 seats if last week's results happened in a UK general election. The prospect of Nigel's upstart party with a huge majority has the traditional parties (rightfully) terrified
