From the Brig to Mar-a-Lago, Former Navy SEAL Capitalizes on Newfound Fame

A year ago, Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher was wearing drab prison scrubs at a brig near San Diego, facing murder charges that could have sent him to prison for the rest of his life. Chief Gallagher was acquitted this summer of charges that he shot at civilians and killed a wounded captive with a knife while serving as a platoon leader in Iraq. The punishment for his lone conviction — posing for a grisly trophy photo with the dead captive’s body — was reversed this fall by President Trump, who has repeatedly praised him. At a political rally in Florida, he called him “one of the ultimate fighters.”

Now, Chief Gallagher is using his controversial past as a springboard to social media followers and branding opportunities ... he is making appearances at influential conservative gatherings and rubbing elbows with Mr. Trump’s inner circle at Mar-a-Lago. Paul Rieckhoff, the founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, who has openly criticized Chief Gallagher, said that the square-jawed, blue-eyed SEAL has been a valuable political weapon for the Trump administration.

The partnership is valuable for Chief Gallagher, too, Mr. Rieckhoff said, because in raising his profile in conservative circles, he can cash in on book deals, speaking engagements and other business opportunities.

Chief Gallagher has appeared regularly on Fox News and other outlets, but declined through his lawyer to speak with The New York Times about his current projects. In an email, his lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, said: “Chief Gallagher is happy to respond to inquiries by legitimate journalists looking to publish factual pieces, but has no time for propagandists who put out knowingly false statements masquerading as fact.”

And all he has to do is write a book about murdering unarmed brown children and women overseas.

murder again. According to interviews and testimony he got a adrenalin rush over the murders he committed. He's going to need his fix. Hey, he got away with it once, he will do it again.

Since he got away with murder, at least once, I’m certain you are correct.

If he has any kind of TV or radio personality he's probably set for life. The right-wing will reward him they way the rewarded Oliver North.

If the testimony of his former troops keeps coming out, he may be a little to hot to handle for a while. Over time though, he won't be. There is also the frighteningly large number of people who will hear the testimony and think he did nothing wrong. Nothing wrong with shooting innocent civilians - because they're brown Muslims. They believe brown people, especially Muslims, are the enemy. So killing the civilians in order to wipe them all out is a-okay with a large segment of the Trump Cult.

I grew up around people like this in the South. They didn't think of minorities as humans. They thought nothing more of them being killed than they thought of stomping an ant or ant hill. I'm not joking. I'm completely serious. Killing an unarmed female would be okay to them. Because that means she's no longer available to have more children - make more of their enemy.

Trump gets a bounce, he gives a bounce. He’s Trump’s idea of a soldier, from war movies.

There is no Honor in Murder, even in war. Other team members don't want this guy around.

What did we honestly expect to happen?

The man is most likely a murderer and war criminal, but what our nation put these men through is unconscionable. There should be a cap on the number of tours a soldier should be allowed to participate in, or stuff like this will be more and more common. I suspect it is fairly common already for soldiers / sailors / marines with high numbers of combat tours, we just do not hear about it.

Even in this case, one of the primary witnesses against him before the trial, later confessed on the witness stand to killing the prisoner himself and allowing Gallagher to walk. He essentially got Gallagher a 'not guilty' verdict on his murder charge, and got him out of jail. Trump's pardon just wiped his record clean after the fact, as Gallagher was already a free man on the street when all this stuff happened.
