(7,277 posts)المجاهدين العرب في الشيشان?, was an international unit of the Islamist Mujahideen that fought in Chechnya and other parts of the North Caucasus.
The first war was nationalist, the second, fundamentally islamist.

(2,698 posts)they'll go all berserker on you even if it means the death of 10 times the number of Russian citizens as terrorists. Terrorists may attack Russian institutions, but can see no profit in taking hostages, only death.

Had to go look up the story:

As the article suggests, later on suspicions that it was a false flag operation arose.

(15,393 posts)It was run by Chechens who are separatists from the region of Chechnya - predominately Muslim - and not liking the Russian/Soviet rule. Much like the Afghanis and many others.

No direct link to ISIS or al-Quaeda but the festering resentment against domination is similar to that the the Great World Powers now inflicts on most other countries.

(40 posts)Given you listed two terrorist organizations that primarily draw members from the Islamic religion (Al-Qaeda and Daesh). Going to assume you were talking about, has Russia had an issue with terrorist organizations that fit within this descriptor.
Yes they have. Mainly Russia's fringe extremist terrorists issues are from militants in Chechnya.
The story goes that after 9/11, the US was ready to begin combat operations in Afghanistan but we didn't have a strategic launching pad in the area. President Bush got an ok from President Vladimir Putin to launch US forces from the Kazakhstan area. it is said Putin did this out of sympathy, in part, given his own country's issues with Islamic militant terrorism.
Side note: Putin did this out of a quid pro quo, he believed this would curry favor from America, and Putin was rather disappointed when America didn't reciprocate the favor.

Last Tuesday, a little noticed but major event signaled the end of an era in Central Asia. The United States closed its only Central Asian airbase in Manas, Kyrgyzstan, formally handing back control to the government of Kyrgyzstan, which has been increasingly aligning itself with Russia.
The Transit Center at Manas was especially important for U.S. and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) efforts in Afghanistan, as it was the first and last stop for soldiers entering Central Asia en route to fight in Afghanistan. Additionally, it was home to a logistics and refueling operation run by the United States Air Force for the war in Afghanistan. The base at Manas was set up in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks with Russias consent and has transported 5.3 million military servicemen from 26 countries in and out the Afghanistan conflict theatre. It became especially important as a transportation hub after 2005, when the United States was evicted from its other base in the region, in Uzbekistan.
