The Iraqi prime minister seems to be suggesting that the US essentially lured Soleimani into a peace mediation and then used that shuttle diplomacy to assassinate him on Iraqi soil.

This is stunning - #Iraq prime minister tells parliament US troops should leave. Says @realDonaldTrump called him to ask him to mediate with #Iran and then ordered drone strike on Soleimani. Says Soleimani carrying response to Saudi initiative to defuse tension when he was hit.

Our European allies are not too thrilled, Putin said this was a stupid move as well as the US military officials who stupidly gave tRump this idiotic attack as a "last resort" option and didn't expect him to choose it. Iran and Iraq are pissed off too. The only country happy about it might be Israel.

You learn to think about things and when I heard where he was killed, it immediately came to mind that it most likely was a set up and he was traveling to a meeting that the US knew about.

My dad always said Suleimani was a bigger danger as a martyr and dead. I remembered him saying that when we had some discussions about Iran.

He also knew that road well near the airport and my Uncle trained Iraqi soldiers there.

Lots of members here have instantly believed the Iraqi PM. Without other evidence. Probably with no assessment of his history of truth-telling or not. Because confirmation bias, I think. 'He said something against tRump so it must be true.'

Will the Iraqi PM go to the UN to have Trump called accountable?

Story was in the NY Times this a.m.:

https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/01/05/world/middleeast/05reuters-iraq-security-un.html

BAGHDAD — Iraq's foreign ministry has lodged official complaints with the United Nations Secretary-General and Security Council over U.S. air strikes on Iraqi soil that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and several Iraqi militia leaders.

The complaint is about "American attacks and aggression on Iraqi military positions and the assassination of Iraqi and allied high level military commanders on Iraqi soil," the ministry said in a statement.

It described the attacks as "a dangerous breach of Iraqi sovereignty and of the terms of U.S. presence in Iraq."

It called on the Security Council to condemn the attacks.

Dumbo apparently did call the Iraqi PM who agreed to mediate a de-escalation between SA and Iran. I don't know how much time elapsed between that call and the assassination, but I doubt that Dumbo knew in advance whom Tehran would be sending to Baghdad to negotiate the de-escalation. The assassination *may* have been simply an impulsive crime of convenience committed by a left hand ignorant of what the right hand was doing. Needs investigating.

..... Suleiman was not met at the airport by Iraqi government officials.....

The option that was eventually approved depended on who would greet General Suleimani at his expected arrival on Friday at Baghdad International Airport. If he was met by Iraqi government officials allied with Americans, one American official said, the strike would be called off. But the official said it was a “clean party,” meaning members of Kataib Hezbollah, including its leader, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/04/us/politics/trump-suleimani.html

.... He was met by Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who had launched the recent attacks against American and who was considered to be an "agent of Iran" ...

Mr. al-Muhandis’s ties to Iran were well known. In 2009, he was identified as an adviser to General Suleimani by the United States Treasury Department, and accused of helping smuggle rockets, sniper rifles and other weapons from Iran to Iraq. American officials said he had also provided “logistical support for attacks” against coalition forces in Iraq and sent militia fighters to train in Iran.

Long before the American invasion of Iraq, he was accused of playing a role in the bombings of the French and American Embassies in Kuwait, in 1983, and the later attempt to assassinate Kuwait’s emir. In 2007, a Kuwaiti court sentenced him to death in absentia.

He also helped found Kataib Hezbollah, a militia that targeted the United States during the Iraq war and was accused of training and equipping a network of anti-American groups. Kataib Hezbollah has continued to oppose the United States, and American officials blamed it for a rocket attack that killed an American contractor last week.

The militias played a crucial role in demolishing ISIS’s self-declared caliphate, and Mr. al-Muhandis became “the most powerful single actor” among the militias, according to a November 2019 report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The report described him as “in essence an Iranian agent.”
