'Empty chairs' across Canada’s academic community after Iran plane crash

TORONTO (Reuters) - The crash in Iran of a Ukrainian Airlines jet bound for Toronto killed dozens of professors and researchers from campuses across Canada, leaving a painful hole in Canadian academia where Iranians have taken on starring roles in engineering.

“It is an unspeakable loss,” said Neda Maghbouleh, a sociology professor at the University of Toronto who studies Iranian migration through the United States and Canada. Four University of Toronto students were killed in the crash.

“The people we lost in the plane truly represented the smartest young researchers in the entire world,” Maghbouleh said.

Many of the dead were highly qualified Iranian-Canadians, some of whom had studied together at Tehran’s Sharif University. The number of Iranian international students in Canada more than doubled between 2016 and 2018, according to Canada’s immigration department.

Many Iranians pursued graduate studies in Canada after the United States’ policy toward Iran hardened in 2017.

Obviously just a anecdotal observation. They seemed awfully good at math.

were American born. In engineering school, all the research assistants were Chinese or from India and were here on stipends from their home governments.

That is the question we need to find out. Was this a Russian defense system triggered to screw Iranian's and piss off Canadian Iranian's?

Who the fuck benefits?

It was in the Persian Gulf and the incident happened at a time of heightened strife with Iran. If a US Navy vessel can make such a mistake given all it's advanced capability, why would you assume that an Iranian anti-aircraft crew would be any better, especially after Trump said that 52 sites would be attacked in their country a couple of days before?

there to work, study and live. Canada was less restrictive than the US, due to Miller's Zero Tolerance crap.

Canada is a more diverse country, I remember when we were like that.

There is about 30 from my area that were on the plane. Doctors, college professors, all highly educated in various professions. So sad, what a terrible thing to happen. All were home for Christmas , visiting families, one couple got married there so family could attend, they met here.
All thanks to Trump!! What an idiot.
