Psychologists have explained quite a lot about Donald Trumps political invincibility and the unconditional allegiance of his followers. One well-supported explanation is that the president keeps his base loyal by keeping them fearful. Through persistent fear-mongering, with scary messages like, Illegal immigrants are murderers and rapists, and Islam hates us, Trump gets to play the role of the great protector.
But there is another major reason why Trump loyalists do not waver no matter how he behaves or what scandals come to light. For most evangelicals, it is not only fear that keeps them in line, but it is also faith. As a cognitive psychology researcher who has been writing about the science underlying Trumps unshakable support since he began his presidential campaign, I have learnedthrough comments, emails, and discussion forumsthat a significant portion of his supporters literally believe the president was an answer to their prayers. He is regarded as something of a messiah, sent by God to protect a Christian nation.
As obvious as this might sound to some, it is something I did not give serious consideration to initially. As someone who is not particularly religious, it did not occur to me that anyone might actually believe that a politician would be sent by an all-powerful supernatural deity to change the course of human history unless it was in a highly abstract or purely metaphorical sense.

Its seems it's just TOO MUCH to accept that 'this is all there is' for the human brain. The fact that Life evolved, to the point of humanity, in the cold, dead vacuum of space is just NOT ENOUGH of a freaking MIRACLE?!?
Nope, we need there to be MAGIC, too!
And Afterlives for all!
Oh, and magical beings, meddling in our daily affairs!

(12,712 posts)I hope we can be rational when it comes to religion by realizing and focusing on the extreme problem with fundamentalism.
I know that some people attribute any beliefs in anything other than scientism to a lack of intelligence, gullibility, mental health issues, etc., but that is merely an unfounded bias that is outlined to promote an agenda with its own motives and often, it is a personal reaction or problem based on experiences.
There are many, many rational, balanced, intelligent people, (and also scientists) who do have religious beliefs, make not mistake about that. Those are the people that would be with us when it comes to nurturing and defending a democracy for us all. Not all religious beliefs are based on the Abraham big three, and not all who practice or worship the big three are both bigoted and largely ignorant of the teachings therein. Our democracy can easily fit those who are religious under the secular umbrella, and in fact, I think that is important, useful, even essential to a healthy society overall.
However, I am really hoping that the above will be considered by vociferous anti-theists and the rest for purely pragmatic reasons. When you haul off painting with a wide brush, you also alienate people that are basically of like mind in other matters and who can be important allies for democracy itself. That alienation is a mistake to be and it is a product of a bias that does not behoove a more liberal and all-inclusive view, which to me is essential in sectarian democracy.
That brings me to my point. I think most of us can agree that fundamentalism, in all cases, but particularly as espoused by evangelicals who have both extreme views and set their sites on influencing, even controlling, our politics are the real culprit here. I would go so far as to say that, like oligarchy, fundamentalism and oligarchy are both dedicated enemies to what we understand to be a free, democratic society. When you look into the core of fundamentalist Christianity, which is largely represented now by evangelical groups and alliances, I think that's the place to draw the line in the sand because you can see an obvious threat by way of their views and intents.
Let's see if we can be friendly with those who are our kindred spirits and have respect for their views and faith if they are also doing the same as citizens in a pluralistic, reciprocal sense. There is no need to yield to the prejudices of those who espouse what is presented as a superior, (supposedly scientific) view on the matter and whose propaganda is often insensitive and based on metaphysical realism rather than fact. In fact, it is often misplaced and specious.
To sum it up, religion is not bad and it is not our problem overall. Fundamentalism on the other hand is extremely dangerous in many ways for a society and maybe we can all agree that respect and unity on all fronts is vital in this matter. Folks who are atheistic and secular might have something to learn from culturally integrated and aware "people of faith", (both East and West) and vica versa. Attempts to estrange them and undue, stereotypical criticism does not even make sense other than having a grudge.
