I seem to remember an early story that Ge. Soleimani was lured to a site where some sort of negotiation was to be discussed.
Does anyone else remember this?

(20,017 posts)I could be wrong but I don't how Dump could have known in advance whom Tehran would be sending to Baghdad to negotiate the de-escalation with the Saudis. Probably a crime of opportunity.

"Adil Abdul-Mahdi was quite clear: I was supposed to meet him in the morning the day he was killed, he came to deliver a message from Iran in response to the message we had delivered from the Saudis to Iran."
The prime minister also disclosed that Donald Trump had called him to ask him to mediate following the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad.

(12,449 posts)if this were true, then the Iranian leadership would be screaming this from the roof tops, so far, nothing from the leadership about this and I would take with a huge grain of salt what the Iraqi Prime Minister is claiming.
There is speculation that the Gen. was set up by the Iranian leadership because he was becoming too powerful for their liking.

There is no absolving this Mango Menace for the crimes he's committed while in and out of office, I'm just advancing a theory that's been discussed here also.

(21,644 posts)Either the Iraqi PM made all that up (and i see no reason why he would have done that), or drumpf lured soleimani out into the open essentially under a flag of truce so he could kill him.

(12,449 posts)if this were true, then why has the Iranian leadership not said one word about it?
You would think that they would be singing this all over the world, yet, not one word for them about this.

(26,355 posts)If Soleimani was led to believe he had diplomatic protections because of the job he was doing at the time, and then we attacked him anyways, that would make Trump and his cronies guilty of Perfidy, which is banned by the Geneva Convention as a war crime.

In any event, I hope we remove our troops from Iraq and many of the surrounding countries. As long as we are there, we should expect more of this junk.

(1,325 posts)Our Fawning Corporate Media that howls about the incompetence of the Trump administration jumps lock-step behind Pompeo when it involves Iran. Pompeo has effectively shut down any discussion on this matter, and our media outlets have naturally played ball on this one. Gawd forbid the Suadis and the Iranians should actually start working out a peace plan. The weapons manufacturers and Generals would lose so much money and power. Amazing how our news companies can whip the populace into agreement whenever there is a scary foreigner story to be sold. Want to see some people who killed thousands of Americans? Let's start with Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. This whole episode stinks like the WMD crap all over again, and many of the same voices who were clamoring for war with Iraq were trotted out to promote this war with Iran.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi has confirmed that Suleimani was in Baghdad at the time of the drone strike on a diplomatic mission. Despairing of their ability to push America into war with Iran for them, Saudi Arabia had recently been exploring a consolation plan B: more peaceful relations with Iran. Iraq was providing the role of intermediary, and Saudi Arabia had recently sent them a de-escalation message for Iran. According to the Iraqi prime minister, the reason Suleimani was in Iraq was to deliver Irans reply. Abdul-Mahadi says that he had a meeting scheduled with Suleimani for 8:30am, just a few short hours before Suleimani was assassinated. Importantly, it is clear that the U.S. knew about these events because, according to reporting by Max Blumenthal, Trump personally thanked Abdul-Mahadi for the role he was playing.
The Iranians and the Iraqis have been howling. Their remonstrations have been buried by our media. And notice how little coverage of the other 7 killed in the strike including al-Muhandis, a key Iraqi political and military figure. The reporting on this whole episode has been absolutely terrible.

(1,325 posts)Just as I didn't believe the crap surrounding the USS Vincennes shooting down Iran flight 665 killing 290 people. And the commander and officers of that ship were given medals for their performance to boot!
