Yes, the Republicans support Trump out of fear, They also support him for this reason.

The Republicans see Trump as a useful idiot. They believe they can control him, they know he is easily misled, easily conned. There is a reason Graham goes golfing with Trump, why he protects Trump. Graham is using him. I would bet money Graham was one of the Republicans who persuaded Trump to take out the general. Trump is literally the most ignorant fool I have ever seen. He knows nothing about foreign policy, history, how the government works, how the presidency works, the constitution.

Trump has spent every minute of his life learning how to use lawyers to get over, how to put on a fake show, how to use the media. That's all he knows and the Republicans know it.

Trump is nothing but a puppet that the Republicans fear and at the same time take advantage of.

I think the military included it in the options available and Trump thought "I can order the assassination of someone?" He got a hard on, remembered that Obama had "gotten to do it" and said "I want that one!" Like so much of what Trump does, it was essentially a Veruca Salt moment - I want it and I want it now. There may have been a few moments of "oh, the base will love it" and "I'll bet this will help with this impeachment bullshit" but at its core I think it was the same as walking into the changing room at a pageant, grabbing women, running for president, everything: total id - this is what I want and I have the power and money to do it.

They feared him and used him but were unsuccessful, in terms of their goals, of controlling him.
