Its not just veterans who experience the condition.
By Anna North
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) fled civil war in Somalia when she was 8 years old, then spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. As a result, she says, she has post-traumatic stress disorder as an adult.
But when she mentioned the condition publicly this week in the context of conflict between the US and Iran, she got pushback from a Republican member of Congress.
During a press conference on Iran Wednesday evening, Omar said that, every time I hear conversations around war, I find myself being stricken with PTSD.
Conservatives were quick to criticize the statement, with Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), who served in Afghanistan, tweeting that her comment was offensive to our nations veterans.

As a veteran with PTSD I couldn't agree more with the article or Ilhan Omar.
Who develops PTSD?
Anyone can develop PTSD at any age. This includes war veterans as well as survivors of physical and sexual assault, abuse, car accidents, disasters, terror attacks, or other serious events. Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event. Some experiences, like the sudden or unexpected death of a loved one, can also cause PTSD.
According to the National Center for PTSD, about seven or eight of every 100 people will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. Some traumas may put an individual at a higher risk and biological factors like genes may make some people more likely to develop PTSD than others.

I work in mental health. I treat many patients with PTSD - that have experienced a variety of traumatic events- from childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, women that were victims of domestic violence, people that were victims of violent robberies, and on and on. The DSM V - Sets the the standards to make diagnosis. Thankfully not the damn Republicans.

Whatever feelings and suspicions some of Omar's other behaviors have caused, I'd want more than this before I even started suspecting it was anything but a way of expressing rejection of war.

(11,752 posts)Carlin did a skit on PTSD as a larger focus on how language changes and is sometimes weakened.
He talked about how in WWI it was "shell shock" a jarring phrase that labelled a serious situation. In WWII it became "combat fatigue" more syllables, not as jarring. In Vietnam is became Post Traumatic Stress Disorder... went the skit, implying that it was jargon that didn't mean anything anymore. While Carlin was usually insightful, he was not correct on this one for exactly the reasons you expressed.
PTSD is an inclusive label that shows that anyone can suffer from trauma, not only combat veterans. We know that Rep Omar experienced the civil war in Somalia. We don't know exactly what she witnessed. Did she lose family members? Did she see people being hurt or killed? Was she threatened? We also know she spent 4 years in a refugee camp. We have seen pictures and heard about the conditions in refugee camps. I cannot imagine that it was a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
It all comes down to Republican binary thinking and their mentality to score political points at all costs. Someone who has been in a car accident can develop PTSD as easily as a combat veteran. Is one more worthy of understanding and adequate treatment than the other?

(53,410 posts)All suffer fro PTSD. The symptoms are hyper vigilance and constant fear and apprehension and behavior altering activity to cope with the anxiety of violence that is triggered by nothing the victim does or says. The violence always comes from and is caused by the abuser. Always.
