I have watched for a thread that I could post my thoughts as a reply but couldn't find one that fit. So here is what I think could happen.
Iran has said the missile attacks on the US bases was just a slap in the face and there will more (hard hitting) retribution against the US for the killing (assassination) of the Iranian General who was the second in power in Iran.
Iran has a history of attacking an enemy in proportion to an eye for eye. Since General Soleimani seems to have been the second in power in Iran and Mike Pompeo seems to have evolved into the face and spokesman for the US on all things to do with Iran as well as being one of the most ardent hawks on war with Iran he seems to me to be the most logical target for the "eye for an eye" philosophy of Iran. If I were Pompeo I would a very deep bunker to hunger down in and stay there until this Iranian crisis is resolved. (maybe until there is a regime change in Iran).
As for Trumps threats to wipe out the cultural sites in Iran you have to remember that Iran's cultural sites go back thousands of years in some cases. That Iran was part of the Persian Empire that was the first world empire (before the Romans and the Greeks) and ruled about 40% of the worlds population. Their culture is very important to them and they are likely to respond to Trumps threats.
There has been a lot of talk that Iran might attack the Statue of Liberty. In my opinion 2 other sites would be more dear to the American people than Madam Liberty. The Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial would be more revered and a more likely target.
I sincerely hope none of this happens and I pray we don't get into a war with Iran. But I think we would be naive to think Iran will not retaliate stronger than they have to date. And I think we would be naive to think that Trump would not stoop to starting a war to get re-elected and retain his power.
Being convicted and and removed from office might might restrain Iran from further retaliation. I hope and pray those 2 things happen.

(11,311 posts)Loss of the general but who knows. They really screwed up by shooting down the jetliner and may have spent all their retaliation mojo.

In Farsi!
How dare he meddle in their internal affairs, it's really none of our business, He's already caused enough problems for the rightful rulers of Iran.
No more sanctions. No more fulminating unrest in a sovereign state.
And especially no more support for regime change, not our job.

(12,449 posts)Iran screwed the pooch by accidently shooting down that Ukrainian airliner, they did have the moral upper hand in this confrontation, but lost it big time with that fuck up, now, any action taken against the US will be counterproductive and will invite a massive response from the US.
