this was going on before they married. Did they think it would stop or get better at some point?

Meghan isn't a naive young woman and Harry knows full well what the Brit press is capable of. She knew exactly what she was marrying. They should have had an escape plan already worked out with The Firm prior to marriage and certainly before having a child. This isn't a sudden issue. What Harry and Meghan have done is messy and immature.

Or that people shouldn’t have a conversation about race in a colonial empire? Or that people above a certain income level or status should just deal with the racism they get?

She's not an idiot, I'm sure her and her husband knew the press would be an issue going into the marriage. Apparently, she assumed she could handle it or she wouldn't have walked down the aisle. I assume he husband thought the same.

But things change. They're making a decision based on what has transpired since the marriage.

In some ways, it is astonishing to hear someone say that this racist abuse is okay because the subject is old, or because one could anticipate the racist attacks would continue.

In fact, why the expulatory gesture? Seriously, why minimize this and blame Meghan Markle for the existence of racism?

The British press has gotten away with this racism for way too long and it needs to be stopped immediately. Only the Queen or Prince Charles can stop it at this point and it's what they need to do. I don't know whether Elizabeth herself believes that dribble that's printed in the papers (probably she doesn't) but it's going to tear her family apart unless she does something about it.

Certainly Charles should be fighting the press even if his mother stays silent.

...not Meghan Markle, but a quote from our very beautiful and successful first lady. Michelle Obama, an educated, intelligent, successful woman in her own right said this in an interview [post 2016 election.] Reporter/interviewer asked, how she dealt with discrimination while her husband was president for 8 years. WFCO President and CEO Lauren Casteel commented that Obama broke a glass ceiling by becoming the first black first lady. She then asked which of the falling glass shards cut the deepest.

“The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut,” she said, referencing being called an ape and people talking about her bottom. “Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color.”

She said she can’t pretend like it doesn’t hurt because that lets those who do the hurting off the hook.

“Women, we endure those cuts in so many ways that we don’t even notice we’re cut,” she said. “We are living with small tiny cuts, and we are bleeding every single day. And we’re still getting up.”
