Shepard Smith talking to MSNBC about primetime spot as network eyes Chuck Todd move

https://www.thedailybeast.com/jitters-at-msnbc-as-brass-eyes-moving-chuck-todd-and-talks-to-shep-smith

But Todd is resisting the move...

MSNBC talent and staffers are bracing for a major 2020 shakeup amid discussion of moving ratings-challenged Chuck Todd to a morning slot and execs talking with Fox News escapee Shepard Smith.

The goal of any reshuffle would be to shed ratings dead weight in the lead-up to the election. Sources at the network cautioned that a new look for the lineup is still up in the air, but brass have been batting around several options.

One of those is new blood in the form of Smith, who abruptly quit Fox late last year after on-air skirmishes with Tucker Carlson and other primetime hosts. Smith has had conversations with MSNBC President Phil Griffin about a potential gig when his non-compete clause expires, although his price tag is expected to be considerable for any interested network.

“It’s unclear what slot he would take, but we’d want him in primetime,” an MSNBC insider told The Daily Beast. “We are well aware [Jeff] Zucker [president of CNN] is also pursuing him, as are a number of the networks.”

At 30 Rock, much of the tinkering is currently focused on the daytime schedule.

With the lackluster performance of Todd’s MTP Daily at 5 p.m.—“a hammock,” as one insider put it, between the robust ratings of Nicolle Wallace’s 4 p.m. show and Ari Melber’s 6 p.m. show—there has been talk of switching Todd to 9 a.m., as Page Six first reported. Under that scenario, the current 9 a.m. anchor, Stephanie Ruhle, could move to 3 p.m., where her financial expertise would mesh well with the market closings.

However MSNBC is owned by NBC Universal and Microsoft. Who owns NBC Universal? Comcast.

It is corporate and tries to appeal to a broad base. I suspect Rachel and Lawrence O'Donnell are on because they were able to secure a guarantee that the brass would not mess with their commentary.

If you want real left wing television, there are 2 networks: Free Speech TV and Democracy Now!

Smith is astoundingly good at presenting facts in a clear easily understandable manner. In my opinion he is up there with Conkrite and Rather. He can’t match Daniel Schorr, but only that British guy, Alistar McClain, was that his name, could top Schorr. No Alistar Cooke, that was his name.

at MSNBC before he gets one.

I like the sound of 'UP With Shep Smith' on weekend mornings as his first task at MSNBC.

...or one of the other MSNBC regulars who've already paid their dues and developed an in-house following.

That said, I'm sure Shep will do fine with whatever results from the bidding war between MSNBC and CNN.

He was special at Fox because he was one of maybe 2 people there who actually cared about facts and truth. At MSNBC or CNN he would just be another reporter.

I actually like Shep Smith but can't say that he would necessarily stand out.

MSNBC may be thinking that he has a base of Fox Viewers who will follow him over but they are likely very wrong.

Giving him Chuck Todd's spot would be an improvement though. Todd is ridiculous.

Wallace @4

Ari @6
Matthews @7 (well not really, but until ratings hit bottom, he'll be there)

Rachel @9

ever has guests on his show. He is the worst for talking over the other person. He asks them a question, they say five or six words, then he finishes their sentence or just blurts out a different topic. He is very annoying.

stayed there for years and gave them legitimacy and didn't always tell truth so fuck that guy
They say they want him in Prime time
That means he replaces Chris Hayes, Rachel or O'Donnell.
Fuck that.
MSNBC/NBC is always looking for conservative Fox viewers, like the Megyn Kelly hire, and don't realize that if they are not willing to lie to the Republican viewers, like Fox does, and tell them bullshit they won't fucking watch.
You have to deliver the world they want, not report the news that is real to get them.
MSNBC is so dumb.
Look at Rachel's rating since Trumpo's election.
More of that wins for you MSNBC.

He's terrible. He never asks the obvious follow-ups. Far too often he allows guests to broadcast their obviously false talking points without challenge... heck, sometimes he even gives a little "uh-huh" which sounds like agreement even though that's not what he means.
