Barr Is Going After Trump's Enemies One by One

onathan Chait: “In May of 2016, shortly after Donald Trump had wrapped up his party’s nomination, but when the notion he might win the presidency seemed remote at best, Benjamin Wittes wrote one of the very early essays attempting to analyze how an obviously authoritarian president might abuse his powers. ‘The soft spot, the least tyrant-proof part of the government, is the U.S. Department of Justice,’ he argued, laying out how prosecutorial discretion could allow a president to harass his domestic enemies.”

“Yesterday’s news that the Department of Justice is exploring yet another probe of James Comey, the former FBI director turned Trump antagonist, would seem to confirm those fears have been borne out.”

They are living scared, they know they cannot cross the line because these crooks will come hard at them, they know the bus is ready for them, just waiting for a slip up.

Barr must go, he needs to be taken out from office, disbarred, he is the most dangerous thug in office today.

some time in the fall to delight the deplorable base and generate donor excitement.

So far, they've failed in their multiple investigations into Hillary, Comey and McCabe. Still have the Durham investigation wildcard as well.

I wish the Justice Department would go ahead and arrest Comey. It just might be the shock Americans need. Certainly children in cages hasn’t done it, but the “news” doesn’t care. But a tall, white republican male in handcuffs. Well now, that would be on the evening news by golly!

I have to think there is a mixed bag of people who may be happy to see Comey in jail, another that doesn't care, those who would be shocked (a minority), another that if you asked them would say "Comey who"? and the other who would cheer if the con pissed straight on their faces and those would be happy about Comey being in jail too, even though they would not know who Comey is.

Our trouble is rooted in this sacred cow. When all this is done, overturn & start over.

Some goals:
Independent (but not free-wheeling) justice department. Can't be part of executive branch & tool of the president.
Term limits for federal judges - de politicize the processes for picking judges & US DA's
No "Supreme Court" as we know it (assemble it from federal judges)
More constitutional review of laws before they are passed, not randomly years later

I would add that the sitting members of the Supreme Court name the Chief Justice. When a new Justice is sworn in a new vote takes place on the Chief Justice.

Every Supreme Court decision seems to be a 5-4 decision - a clear indication that the decision is not based on the Constitution and law but on politics. Hobby-Lobby is a case in point.

"that could never happen". Now? Literally anything could happen.

After watching the weird press conference with him coming out of the light, my beloved turned to me and said that his fear is on Presidential Debate night, he arrives out of a light with a smoke machine and has our nominee arrested for treason on TV. Just for the spectacle of it all.

Yes, it is nuts, but once the Senate pats him on the head and says "What you did was good, real good Donny", he'll go to acts of fuckery no one has even imagined.

part of it all.

If a Democrat did what Trump has done, even a quarter of the things, our own party would have forced him from office long before now. Actually, someone like him would never have been elected in the first place.

But, for them, there is no line they won't cross.

"The Senator was vulgar, almost illiterate, a public liar easily detected, and in his “ideas” almost idiotic... Certainly there was nothing exhilarating in the actual words of his speeches, nor anything convincing in his philosophy. His political platforms were only wings of a windmill...He would whirl arms, bang tables, glare from mad eyes, vomit Biblical wrath from a gaping mouth; but he would also coo like a nursing mother, beseech like an aching lover, and in between tricks would coldly and almost contemptuously jab his crowds with figures and facts–figures and facts that were inescapable even when, as often happened, they were entirely incorrect."

seen near misses. Warren G. Harding was a pretty corrupt asshole, Andrew Jackson wasn't above ignoring the rule of law when it inconvenienced him. Lewis saw all that and it was a matter of simple extrapolation into the future, IMO.

The whole goal behind putting rightwing ideologues into the Courts is to neuter the Courts and make them docile tools of a dictator, like in many parts of the world.

We are going to have to do this the hard way. We are going to have to win the Presidency, hold the House by a big margin and retake the Senate. There simply is no other route.

We have an election coming up in just over ten months, we need to make sure that no part of the Democratic Party coalition has it's head shoved up it's ass, and if that is the case, we need to once again call on African Americans to save the country, that is the only group that appears to heavily see the clear and present danger of a Trump second term and a Senate led by Mitch McConnell or any other republican.

Look at the damage an incompetent moron has accomplished, even with some slightly less incompetents in cabinet positions, between elections. Our DoJ is now headed by a truly dangerous man who seems determined to make it completely political. A rogue A.G. means that crimes are redefined to suit the rogue's agenda.

The problems that allowed this orgy of destruction and looting need to be addressed. Our bureaucracy is not enough of a flywheel to keep things from being deliberately dismantled between elections. It is my hope that there are people brainstorming over this, right now.

The fact is thugs have catbird positions in our government and the only way to stop that is soundly beat them electorally, once that is done, we can tweak laws to make their current conduct impossible. I think the failure to see that reality is part of the state of mind that lead some people to believe that there is no difference between democratic officeholders and republican ones, that fucked up state of mind is a large part of why we are where we are.
