to help sea creatures until the climate rebalances?
Use our technology to their benefit.

(1,826 posts)Basically displaces heat and would warm the earth as much as it cools the ocean

(115,922 posts)And even assuming it was possible with any technology, the fact is that cooling creates more heat. Stand on the other side of your air conditioner - you'll feel that it's blowing hot air. Heat doesn't go away, it's just moved. Google the refrigeration cycle.

(6,561 posts)Since refrigeration isn't perfect (actually far from it), inefficiencies result in more heat coming out of the cooling device into the air or wherever it would go, than the water would be cooled ... and, of course, it would require huge amounts of energy to operate, significantly more than double what we use now. I've no doubt you know this, just wanted to make this part of the answer.

(3,539 posts)What if the worlds resources were put into desalinating the Mediterranean Sea and irrigating the Sahara desert? Especially if some aspects of the project could run off solar power? Please feel free to rip holes in my idea; its something Ive been wondering about...

(457 posts)which will generate heat and add to the carbon emissions.
Even if we were to use solar, wouldn't we rather use that energy on land to reduce carbon emissions?
Disaffected
(4,571 posts)utterly impractical. The heat capacity of the oceans is immense as would be the energy required to power the refrigeration needed to cool it.
As well, that would not solve the absorbed CO2 problem which is about as big a problem as the increasing temperatures.

(36,486 posts)Deep ocean water has a very uniform temperature, around 0-3 °C, while the temperature near the surface (where the vast majority of sea life exists) averages about 17°C
90 % of the total volume of the ocean is really, really cold

(62,444 posts)Thats an interesting idea you have there. Could you perhaps provide a general sense of what sort of refrigeration technology were talking about here?
Like floating solar powered Peltier coolers, for example?
Some sort of OTEC-powered system?
