OUTSTANDING choice! Finally, they name a carrier after a bonafide HERO!
Doris Dorie Miller was a mess attendant (one of the only jobs then available to black sailors) on board the USS West Virginia, which was moored at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 when Japanese bombers attacked. Miller tended to the mortally wounded captain before manning a .50-caliber machine gun and firing at enemy planes.

(11,155 posts)an officer, 1st Lieutenant versus Lincoln's Captain. Like Reagan who also has a carrier named after him and was an officer, Truman didn't have to serve in the military but chose too. Truman and Reagan both had poor eyesight.
