WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. President Trump has quickly turned the U.S. drone killing of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani into a boast for the campaign trail, regaling supporters with tales of his role in the operation as he seeks to burnish his commander-in-chief credentials in an election year.
At a campaign rally in Milwaukee last week and in a private event with Republican donors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., this weekend, Trump has cast Maj. Gen. Soleimanis death this month as overdue justice for a man who denigrated the United States and used roadside explosives to kill and maim.
In doing so, Trump has not bothered to vigorously defend the legal justification for the drone strike he ordered. (The administration has said Soleimani was planning imminent attacks on U.S. assets but has not put forward detailed evidence.) Trump also seems to have abandoned his unfounded claim that up to four U.S. embassies were threatened after Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper and other top officials acknowledged they were not aware of such a threat.
Rather, Trump has focused on placing himself at the center of the action. In leaked audio from the GOP fundraiser, Trump described listening in the White House Situation Room to live updates from a U.S. official who counted down the seconds until the strike on Soleimani was carried out.

Oh FFS the dotard's insecurity is shining big time. Obama never tried to brag about Bin Laden's death and he attacked our own soil.

Is an unmanned drone attack on a vehicle the same thing as the Osama bin Laden SEAL raid?

(12,601 posts)For example, his farmer bailout (including big corporate farms) cost the taxpayers billions of dollars so he could brag how good he was to the farmers (ignoring how his tariffs had driven many of them into bankruptcy or suicide).
"Space Force" is going to be a multi-billion dollar boondoggle based on a throw away line at a campaign rally, even though the Air Force already has a Space Command that does pretty much what Trump claims his camouflaged ego organization (whose purpose has still not been defined) will do. Another taxpayer-financed talking point.
Getting paid a billion dollars for providing a mercenary army to the Saudis is another talking point, even though he has yet to say exactly into which government account the money is going, as well as the actual cost to taxpayer. Also, what are we being paid to do, and how many American lives are predicted to be lost in what is essentially a business transaction.
He runs the country into bankruptcy so he can brag about "the huge tax cut" he, and he alone, accomplished, negating the fact that 90% goes to the top 1% and big corporations. Another taxpayer funded talking point.
Plus he uses Air Force One to fly from ego rally to ego rally, with no accounting for the cost to taxpayers. Past presidents had to reimburse the government for the portion of a trip which wasn't associated with his presidential duties, which is why Bush was so good at presenting some award ("Best Middle School Patriotic Speech" ) with a multi-million dollar fundraiser in Los Angeles. Not a talking point, but a fact to be researched by some enterprising reporter.
My point is, I bet when you listen to one of his speeches (without puking) you can find that the taxpayers have been left holding the bill for each one of Fat Donnie's talking points.
