As deficits soar, Trump asks, Who the hell cares about the budget?

Donald Trump delivered remarks at a private dinner with wealthy donors Friday night at Mar-a-Lago, and as the Washington Post reported, the president shared some thoughts about the nations finances.
For most of President Barack Obamas time in office, Republicans seemed to care very much about the budget, making fears around the national debt and deficit their top talking point. Theyve backed off those concerns under Trump.
The Republicans comments came just four days after the Trump administration reported that the annual budget deficit surpassed $1 trillion in 2019, despite the growing economy, and despite the fact that Trump promised voters hed produce the opposite results.
Trump has now added $2.6 trillion to the national debt in just three years more than Obama added to the debt in his entire second term.
Its against this backdrop that the current president has chosen indifference. And though Im generally loath to agree with Trump, his blunt rhetorical question Who the hell cares about the budget? may have some merit.

(82,849 posts)During the bygone era of the Tea Baggers, there was NOTHING more important than the budget deficit, and the horrible burden we were laying on our children and grandchildren. It was far preferable to have our citizens starving, homeless, in the street than to add one more dollar to the national debt.
So, the Obama administration hamstrung itself, reined in spending, did what it could to collect revenue, and brought the budget deficit down to about a half trillion a year. Heck, the Clinton administration had actually turned a surplus by the end.
Now? Nobody in the media seems to remember fiscal responsibility or budget discipline as the Republicans once again empty the Treasury into the overstuffed pockets of the wealthy. Our people die for want of even the most basic medical care because it's unaffordable, yet another round of tax cuts for the richest of the rich is the nostrum that will cure everything that ails our country.

(23,375 posts)... GWB.
Deficits don't matter, we have a war to fight.
And Republicans always like to claim they care about balancing the budget. They would take steps to balance it, if they had the votes to eliminate welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. And, with some moaning, they'd eliminate the V.A.
