'Go back to Iowa,' Brooklyn leader tells recent New York transplants in controversial speech

Washington Post

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams made a controversial appeal to gentrifiers at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event on Monday.

“Go back to Iowa,” Adams, who is expected to be a top Democratic contender in New York’s 2021 mayoral race, told transplants. “You go back to Ohio! New York City belongs to the people that [were] here and made New York City what it is.”

"Go back to Iowa, you go back to Ohio. New York City belongs to the people that were here and made New York City what it is," — Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams on Monday, railing against gentrification and the affordability crisis.

The fiery remarks, which some critics compared to President Trump’s tweet last year declaring that four minority Democratic congresswomen should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” took place during a celebration honoring King that was hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network in Harlem. Though Adams later clarified that he only objected to new arrivals who don’t bother to acknowledge longtime residents or get involved in their communities, many on social media said that his remarks were unnecessarily divisive and uncomfortably close to xenophobic diatribes aimed at new immigrants.

Our town has municipal sewer service, road department, fire and police, LEAF PICKUP in fall... and so forth.

We also have a community website.

"So one person posts on the community board, "Guy across the street is raking his leaves into the gutter. Who does he think is going to pick them up?"

Another one, wants the phone number of the nearest zoo. Seems three of their deer got lose and are in her back yard.

And so it goes.

move here, Florida, and further fuck it up beyond all recognition while voting for the prickscotts, rubios, gaetzs, et al.

no taxes to speak of, roads falling apart, water and sewer systems over loaded, millions of over priced ticky tacky look alike condos/apts, while they complain about how crowded the roads to Olive Garden are.

it's one of the safest big cities in the country in terms of crime rates - both violent and non violent.

sure, there are areas that aren't safe and you need to use common sense, but overall for a city of 8 million, it's very safe.

back to their shithole "real" 'Murika enclaves.

Let Rush, Hannity and the rest of the local cookie cutter hate talkers try to make a living without the economic power, audience and reach of blue cities.

Despite his craven little walk-back, I don't think this is the sort of candidate Democrats should support.
