And I occasionally travel overseas in the course of my job.
When I travel to some, let's call them problematic areas, I need to out process as if I was deploying.
That includes the need to take some refresher training courses prior to departure.
I retired a LONG time ago, and I am about as far from a low drag high speed operator as you're likely to find in theater. But I still need to check the boxes.
Anyway, I was doing the SERE (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) training and the post capture section included a "Resisting Indoctrination" portion
This information feels like something we need to keep in mind in everyday America now.
First, recognize the attempts to indoctrinate you and which propaganda type you are dealing with - Ideological, Political or Religious fanatics differ in focus but share several traits:
-Only they possess the truth
-Will NOT tolerate opposing views
-No matter the subject of the discussion they will introduce THEIR values and judgement into the conversation.
-Attempt to force you to adopt or at least to concede the validity of their distorted out look
Look out for the use of one or more of the following methods of indoctrination:
-Music and dramatic recordings
-Posters video clips and films
-One sided media
-Lies half truths and incomplete information

These tell us how our government is talking to us.
Only by being aware can we stop them from harming us and our country in ways that would be difficult to change.

"Your unit and the US Government will keep faith with you, care for your family and make every effort to recover you"
I kept thinking -THIS US GOVERNMENT?. But of course they mean the DoD and I have faith that the Armed Forces will do exactly that.
I wouldn't bet a mud clod against a gold nugget that the Trumpistas even know what keeping the faith means, but the military - for all its flaws - They know what that means

(6,275 posts)oh, never mind. Nah, it's all in my imagination.
But seriously, I wonder if there's even been a study done as to what type of people fall for indoctrination and what kind doesn't: economic status, IQ, religion, whatever. Might be an interesting read considering who supports the current farce.

(70,272 posts)the answer is yes. there was massive psyche research after ww2 into how the german people went along.
and the research that ca misused was into how people were being radicalized online by both the modern kkk and isis.
they took that research, and turned it on it's head, and here we all are in the grip of vanilla isis.

(15,963 posts)This is what they are up against. But hey, they can't help it. They have been indoctrinated, manipulated, lied to and yet they can't recognize the threat.
Poor Poor Fox Viewers.
However, Fox isn't the only media outlet doing this. They ALL do it. ALL THE TIME

(10,497 posts)They leverage their ad dollars to control the media. I watched BP do this very effectively during the BP oil spill litigation.
The two root causes of most of our countrys problems stem from our media propaganda and campaign donations (bribes).

Fox is just the most obvious. But other media behemoths are propaganda machines too.
You need to consider who owns them. And then you will see how careful we need to be about what we believe.

The US has a long & virtually complete history of waves of cults, millenialists, conspiracy theorists, red scares, yellow scares, immigrant myths, pseudo science, medical fads, & other nonsense. Pick any random year, I'll bet you'll find something floating to the surface in the press or other accounts.

(6,221 posts)I learned it from my dad with his actions. The way he continued to honor any oath I knew he had taken. His marriage vows and his military enlistment AND discharge oath. Let me explain his discharge oath.
When we kids would ask him what he did in WW II he said he was a radio operator. Period. Years later when I had been discharged from the USAF we were talking and he asked me what a typical day was like as a medic. I told him then said how about your day as a radio operator. He said well I only told you part of the story because I had to swear an oath that I would not tell the full story. Turns out he was a radio operator in Naval Intelligence work in a program the was using top-secret technology to locate German submarines in the South Atlantic. When the allies were fighting in North Africa the Germans sent U-boats to intercept and sink supply ships and troopships. The intercept coded messages were sent by the U-boats using enigma encryption.
They didn't want the Germans to know they had broken the code. His job was intercepting the raw code and passing it on to codebreakers in the UK.
The British broke the code at Bletchley Park | Home of the Codebreakers http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/
The movie is here:
My dad had no problem honoring his oath for 25+ years. Can the Senators honor their oaths one of which is barely 24 hours old?

(90,878 posts)...during the runup to BushCheney's invasion of Iraq.
All the major news stations went for it in a ratings frenzy -- there were special graphics, special words and phrases, even special theme music for every intro and "breaking news" announcement.
My feelings were confirmed by a lot of people I knew then, some of whom have now passed on of extreme old age. Some were Holocaust survivors, some had been in Dutch Indonesia when the Japanese invaded, some were from various countries in Western Europe. What was going on in the US in 2001 was triggering memories of experiences 60 to 70 years prior.
Your words are quite timely.
