Glenn Greenwald Charged With Cybercrimes in Brazil

Mr. Greenwald is accused of being part of a “criminal investigation” that hacked into the cellphones of prosecutors and public officials.

By Ernesto Londoño

Updated 11:37 a.m. ET

RIO DE JANEIRO — Federal prosecutors in Brazil on Tuesday charged the American journalist Glenn Greenwald with cybercrimes for his role in the spreading of cellphone messages that have embarrassed prosecutors and tarnished the image of an anti-corruption task force.

In a criminal complaint made public on Tuesday, prosecutors in the capital, Brasília, accused Mr. Greenwald of being part of a “criminal organization” that hacked into the cellphones of several prosecutors and other public officials last year.

Mr. Greenwald could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Intercept Brasil, a news organization Mr. Greenwald co-founded, has published several articles based on a trove of leaked messages he said he received last year.

In a 95-page criminal complaint, prosecutors say Mr. Greenwald did more than merely receive the hacked messages and oversee the publication of newsworthy information.

The massive corruption the RW and Russia have instilled in the RW and radical fringes of many nations seems to have erased boundaries and create entanglements too many are happy to walk into...

They're in the archives so feel free to search for them. But let me give you a brief summary:

1. Glenn isn't a "journalist"

2. Wannabe journalists engaging in or encouraging others to commit crime for the sake of a "story" are not protected by the law.

3. Glenn has smugly been looking down on us ever since Trump got in (who Glenn shilled for, never forget) as some kind of penance for daring to nominate Hillary Clinton (who Glenn publicly said as early as 2014 that he would do everything in his power to stop).

4. Since Glenn celebrated fascism crashing down on America like a biblical plague, it's only karma that the same kind of bullying fascist strongman come to infest his little ivory tower leftist heaven.

5. KremlinGate is the biggest U.S. political scandal in our lifetimes, and Greenwald (who made his Pulitzer-winning fame on the basis of transparency and investigative reporting) spent the first three years continually denying it ever happened, and since then he's been trying to subvert Mueller, the impeachment, and pretty much everything the #Resistance has tried to accomplish... Oh, but don't ever accuse him of supporting Trump

6. Car Wash is the biggest Brazilian scandal in the history of forever, and Glenn "Mr. Transparency" Fucking Greenwald has been actively trying to sabotage the entire investigation for the sole purpose of trying to retroactively exonerate his hero Lula... And when Dilma got removed from office Greenwald had the unmitigated gall to scream "WASHINGTON-BACKED COUP!!" with absolutely ZERO fucking evidence whatsoever -- Oh, but no amount of evidence could ever convince him that Trump committed any crimes whatsoever... So very fearless and adversarial... Glenn ought to have his Pulitzer yanked

7. Then there's Russia, Syria, China, Ukraine, Iran, the German thing, the New Zealand thing, the list goes on. Believe me when I tell you I've got SIX fucking years of receipts bookmarked and most of which I've posted here... So I suggest you dive into the archives before pointing the finger at me of all people.

That being said, Greenwald, like anyone else, deserves due process and I wish him luck. I'm sure he has the funds and resources necessary to defend himself (or flee again if it comes to that).
