I just did. They ask for zip code. I looked up some intel and saw that the University of Louisville was in 40208. The staffer asked for my zip code. I gave that one. Then he said dya happen to know what county that is? I didnt. So I said I just moved here and just starting to learn my way around.
BUT WHAT THAT TELLS ME:
Theyre only interested in their own state callers. So I bet my message Fair, NOT Fixed, NOT Fake, NOT Phony was going to be totally disregarded.
SO IF YOU WANT TO CALL and youre not from their state:
Do a little research beforehand.
If you have family or friends in that district, use THEIR zip code. If you can look up their address first, check what county its in. They just might ask.
Theyre getting smart. We need to be smarter.
I also said I dont want to give my address because I dont want to get any mail from him since I disagree with him.
Response: yer not gonna get any mail. Do you happen to know what county that is? That when I said I just moved there and dont know my way around yet.
Just so you know. BE PREPARED.

The key is dollars; McConnell needs to know that we will outspend them.

Most every town has a Pleasant or Main St. Pick a random number and add it to the front.

(660 posts)When I called, the call goes right to a recorded message, and you cannot leave a message. Hmmmm....interesting
calimary
(81,540 posts)Found that to be true in many cases.
But I started by calling his Washington DC office. And when I did, I got that same recording. There was no way to leave a message.
So that, in turn, could mean
A) they dont want any calls, period;
B) theyre already too inundated with phone calls and turned things off (or maybe the system broke down?);
C) theyre getting too many calls from people disagreeing or complaining about what ol Moscow is doing and they dont want to hear more or allow the count of those calls to keep rising.

(81,540 posts)And true enough. I don't live in Kentucky. And I didn't "just move there." I lied.
But I wanted my comment to count and carry weight. I wanted to disrupt a little bit. I wanted to do my part to destabilize the enemy. And since their side doesn't mind putting their thumb on the scale to rig the game, skew the results, break the rules, color outside the lines, and otherwise manipulate conditions to win or to screw with our side, then why can't I do that back at them? Why shouldn't I?
And sometimes, there's the matter of a level playing field. Which we DO NOT have. I came to the realization awhile ago that the opposition probably will never be willing to play by the rules. They'll always be interested in how they can get around the rules to do what they want. I remember in 2007, watching Monica Goodling admit under oath "I crossed the line" when investigators questioned what she'd been up to while working for dubya's attorney general Alberto Gonzales. She described how her priority, once she'd hired on, was to figure out "how to get around" the rules, laws, and conventions. And that was back toward the end of bush/cheney. That kind of crap has gone on WAY longer than anyone among us can remember. That side of the aisle doesn't want to have to follow rules or stay within the guardrails if it means they can't get what they want - which is almost always ill-gotten gain.

And they're ALWAYS gonna do that, dammit! I realized at one point that, SINCE they're always gonna play that way, and I want a level playing field, maybe the only thing to do is reverse-tilt that playing field, toward the way I wanted. Taste of their own medicine. See how they like it. And I apologize, especially to those, like you, fallout87, who are far more noble, pure of heart, and clean-of-conscience than I am. This stuff ain't pretty. But neither is politics. And I can be just as machiavellian as the next guy. At least for now. At least toward republi-CONS. Hey, as soon as they start fighting fair - and stop the gerrymandering and the many different kinds of voter suppression and other nasty sneaky-ass tricks that elbow out (and thereby silence) anyone they suspect will vote against them - I'll be VERY glad to fight fair again, too.
There is one further point I want to underscore here (repetition is good!). And it comes in the form of several questions. Because there are numerous ways to confront, and preferably confound, the opposition:
Have you lived in another state, earlier in your life? Or another congressional district?
Still have friends or relatives there? Roommates/ex-roommates? Ex-love interests? School mates? People marry, divorce, change jobs, retire, go back to school, move around - how many people do you know who live elsewhere now, themselves?
Are you still in touch? Ever go visit them? Hang out? Stay for a week or weekend? Vacation there or go to family or class reunions or trips for the holidays or summer? If so, when you're there, you're probably out 'n' about, there, going visiting, out to restaurants, the movies, sporting events, tourist attractions or kiddie palaces. Maybe you run errands or shop at the local supermarket, run to the drug store, go sightseeing, get your gas tank filled? You're using their roads and their general infrastructure there. Your shopping and spending supports the local economy and the people working who serve you, help you, and staff the cash registers. You're helping the local tax base and the business community. Which means YOU have a STAKE in that community, however brief and temporary. And if you have friends or loved ones there, you REALLY have a stake in that area.
In my opinion, that certainly gives you a claim to weigh in. ESPECIALLY on behalf of those folks you care about, who live there. So why shouldn't you call in?
I once called Susan Collins' office in Maine. I lived in California. I've never been to Maine, but my college-age grand-niece still does, and she's basically alone now since her mom (my niece) recently died and her divorced dad lives on the other side of the country. I still care about her and worry over her, even though we've only met via letters and the phone but never in person. I called Collins' office about some issue, and I identified myself as not living there but caring about someone who does. The staffer was rude and confrontational. Barked at me. "And WHAT does this have to do with the STATE of MAINE???" I decided - "okay for YOU, dude." You and yours are gonna hear from me whether you want to or not. And I've never let up since. I'm NO angel!
I've also called out of state as a campaign donor. Now former-Senator Heidi Heitkamp comes to mind, who, the morning after the Sandy Hook shooting was on "Good Morning America" insisting she was going to do nothing about stopping the spread of assault weapons. I was not happy that someone I'd helped to elect was taking that position - especially after that horrible shooting. I got shit for that from the staffer who took the call. He didn't want to listen to me and did want to give me a hard time. And I pointed out that - "yes, I know I don't live in North Dakota, but when she was running for the Senate, she was VERY happy to take MY CALIFORNIA MONEY that I donated to her campaign!" Btw - that shut him up. He didn't have a comeback for that.
I live for results like that.
