(174 posts)It just may be as likely as not. I'll err on the side of optimism; it can't hurt.
Hear ya....but, my cynical side acknowledges Republicans are a criminal breed.

(52,387 posts)so if mcturtle isn't barreling everything he wants through, then it must be because at least 4 republican senators objected.
now, they might be objecting only long enough to extract some political compensation, that's all the usual washington game....

(129,662 posts)to subpoena people and stuff from the WH. So no "break" at this point.
Schumer submitted another to do the same regarding the State Department.

(3,634 posts)For at least 30-40 Senators of both parties, maintaining the dignity of their "most exclusive club on Earth" is paramount. And they know that Trump has decided subpoenas don't apply to him, so they run the risk that the WH will diss the Senate as they did the House and reveal them to be equally impotent in the matter of enforcement. There are probably more than a few Dems who would have voted to table that one if it had any chance of passing.
On the other hand, Mitch caved on the lightning dead-of-night schedule and introducing House evidence without even any public prodding. The abysmal performance of the WH defense can't be helping. The real test is when they get around to considering witnesses and documents that weren't part of the House evidence. I can believe there are more than 4 who have told Mitch they can't go home and expect re-election if it doesn't at least look like a real trial as compared to Clinton's.

(129,662 posts)(which was supposedly a stipulation by 4 of the most vulnerable Senators) was to wait until AFTER all the opening statements before allowing motions to request the Senate do subpoenas. So it was agreed that if Schumer presented these Amendments now (at the beginning) then they would table each one down the line.
However by doing them anyway, this puts the Democrats' case out there at the beginning knowing that people may be tuning in for the 1st day (or two) and may drop out later...

Publicly call out the Senators that you think will break ranks with McConnell. Put their damn feet to the fire!
Otherwise, shut up and sit down. You're not contributing a damn thing except to get your name in the media. And frankly, you're boring.

The cowards and hypocrites will do as turtle tells them. If one or two get permission to break on a single vote, it will be so they can thump their chests back in their states. We can't be chastised anymore for saying that republican lawmakers are lying shits.
