50 Years Ago Today: Boeing 747 makes maiden commercial airline flight for Pan Am

50 years ago today, the Boeing 747 made its first commercial flight from New York to London for Pan American.

As the Republic burns, I harken back to a time when Boeing didn't suck.

Seems like just a couple of weeks since I was reading here about the Pan-Am 747 brought down on Lockerbie, Scotland.

Back then -
Pan Am was the top airline - classy, international, adventurous
Boeing was almost heroic in its innovation and triple backup that set the standard. Workers at Boeing were proud, dedicated, loyal, and knew they had to be responsible.

Pan Am is gone (Northwest too), and the money men have trashed a once fine company. The intangibles are what makes a company great but for money men, there is no line on the balance sheet for such things. They are fools.

I boarded a nearly full flight that originated in India. I was seated at the front and remember looking back to see a sea of colorful turbans. Most unique food that put all other airline meals to shame, albeit minuscule portions.

In those days we had nice hot meals even if the portions were way too small - now we're lucky if we get peanuts

Then money and excessive and relentless corporate greed and lust for power took over and everything went to shit.
