Coronavirus death toll jumps to 80, five US cases confirmed: Everything we know
The new coronavirus, which now claimed 56 lives in China, has now been identified in California and Arizona.
A never-before-seen virus detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan has claimed more than 50 lives and infected more than 2,000 Chinese citizens with a pneumonia-like illness, according to China's National Health Commission. The virus was first reported to the World Health Organization on Dec. 31 and has been under investigation since. Chinese scientists have linked the disease to a family of viruses known as coronaviruses, which include the deadly SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome.
On Friday, French authorities confirmed three cases inside the country, the first known cases in Europe and Australia announced its four. On Sunday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a third case in the US, this time in Southern California. There are now more than 60 patients under investigation for possible infection in over 20 US states, according to Dr. Nancy Messonnier of the CDC.
Scientists have yet to fully understand the destructive potential of the new virus, known as 2019-nCoV. Researchers and investigators are just beginning to figure out where it originated, how it's transmitted and how far it has spread.

I'm now hearing an estimated mortality rate of 15%. 20 potential states is alarming.

(17,023 posts)Its 2% and all of those were people who had other issues that compromised their immune system.

(13,431 posts)I'm also not sure where you're reading/hearing that all of the deaths are in people with compromised immune systems. That has not been the case from what I have read.

(17,023 posts)Many will experience very mild symptoms and never be counted as having it. There was a video posted on DU.

(34,117 posts)That was an early conjecture, which turned out to be incorrect.
And just doing the arithmetic should tell you that 2% is off. 80/2794 = .02863 (or nearly 3%)

(17,023 posts)identified. Many who get this will have minor symptoms and not seek medical care so they wont get counted. So rough math, say that number is 30%, if 2795 identified that works out to 2.2%. I think 70% seeking care is a really high number.

(34,117 posts)which have completely run their course.
Death toll currently is 2.9% - based on actual deaths and confirmed infections. Because some of those infections are brand new (no time to kill the host yet), the rate will likely be between the two. I've heard predictions of 4%.

(1,115 posts)Looks like the 15% is way outdated.
Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)This thing is moving so fast that estimates based on confirmed cases are likely to be low, since about half of the current cases were diagnosed in the last day of so (in other words - there will be later deaths from the newly diagnosed that will drive up the death rate from the calculated 2.xx%. But early 15% is not likely to be sustained, once we learn what makes this thing deadly.

(3,790 posts)and its way worse than they are saying?

(20,921 posts)However, there is every reason to beleive the number of cases knowm and diagnosed compared to the number of people actually infected is probably an undercount. After already going through SARS it appears China is very interested in getting international help and is cooperating to the best of their ability. At least according to interviews with the experts in this stuff.

(2,199 posts)The first lines of defense in containment is identifying and isolating those with fever, other symptoms.
Not defending the Chinese, but without symptoms, impossible to screen everyone to figure out those who are carrying and spreading it.

(2,199 posts)I can't find one, doubt you can either. It's irresponsible to make that claim without scientific data.
