Maybe limit them to a gentle massage -- nothing scary.

(146,338 posts)Not very large, so probably minimal damage from something like that, although it will rock some boats pretty hard.

(146,338 posts)That's not all that significant as tsunamis go. It will rock some boats hard in harbors, but won't cause flooding much.

(146,338 posts)We had a tsunami warning about that size when I lived in California. So, I went to some very high sand dunes near the ocean and watched for it. It came. The water went up; the water went down. I went home.
It did cause some boats in a nearby harbor to bang against each other, though. That was it. 1-meter isn't much, really.

(33,484 posts)who's from Kingston was telling me that there likely won't be a tsunami, as the trench between JA and Cuba is so deep. He's been through more than a few quakes in JA as a kid and agreed this was a big one. Told me about the time his bedroom wall opened and closed back up during a quake many years ago there. So the epicenter was in Lucea?
Stay safe, malaise!

The water won't reach us. Port Royal, Kingston proper, Portmore and then all the coastal areas - worried about Lucea, Westmoreland, and the rest of the coast.
It was closest to Lucea and Westmoreland.
Hope all your friends and family are okay.

And if they thought it was just a 5 something, they would have never thought of possible tsunamis.

(31,409 posts)that I'm not on a Caribbean cruise right now any where near Jamaica!
I lived in SoCal for 23 years so have been through the shakes a number of times. Worst one was the Sylmar quake of 1971 that was a 6.6 My roommate and I (students at UCLA at the time) thought it was the end of world when it woke us up at 6 am. Kept shaking and shaking and shaking.
I am very happy not to live in earthquake country any more.

(53,410 posts)Im glad you were far away from the epicenter. The Loma Prieta earthquake was a 6.9 on the richter scale and that caused a huge amount of damage! It took months to rebuild the freeway and to fix the Bay Bridge, both of them are the traffics bottleneck for cars crossing from Oakland to San Francisco. Traffic was a nightmare. You had to drive an extra hour more than the usual long commutes before the earthquake.

(869 posts)I have spend time in Jamaica, and on Grand Cayman. I have been to Hell and back!
The first time I was in Jamaica, for work, I was spending time in the Wyndham. I then moved into the Spanish Hotel in Kingston. I received panicked phone call the next morning: "Are you all right? We are trying to track down everybody who is at the Wyndham.. There had been a fire." Yup, the day after I left the thing burned.
The second time on Jamaica was part of a cruise, and I visited Nine Mile. Man, you should have seen the paraphernalia on sale there!...
As I have written to you before, Malaise, I have spend a lot of time in the Caribbean. I have done Hurricane damage assessments after both Irma (on Barbuda) and Maria (on Dominica). I have seen the awful destruction on these islands.
So whenever I hear something like this unfold, I think of everybody there. My thoughts, right now, are with you.
malaise
(269,225 posts)I remember that fire at the Wyndham - it started in the kitchen and spread.

(269,225 posts)There is structural damage, cracks in buildings, a few school kids with panic attacks and so on. Of course there was choas on the streets as everyone ran out of buildings and headed home.
Listening to folks on the local news, it seems that lots of folks had stuff falling - we were lucky.
Meanwhile there really was no chance of a tsunami in Kingston.
2naSalit
(86,860 posts)oriented with the lay of the islands and I agree. The USGS has a great web tool for looking at terrain and fault lines and such. Since Kingston is on the south of the island and the quake center north of it, I can see that now.
Still pretty hairy situation.
