I don't usually go there but I needed a couple of non food items my small town grocery doesn't carry and it is in the next small town about 12 miles away (in a very red state just outside of Wichita). I went just after noon and wore my mask and gloves but the scary part, other than employees almost no one was wearing a mask or gloves or even spacing out (it was marked on the floor every few feet). Luckily it wasn't super crowded so I got in and out safely. Just the total disregard for others is weighing on me, I can't believe people are this way. There were even children running about by themselves.
The only interactions I had were with a young guy who got in the checkout line behind me but was right up on my basket (I had finished loading it on the conveyor), I gave him a nasty glare and he shuffled around for a moment and then moved to the next checkout... They did have plexi glass in front of the checker and when I had paid I commented to the young lady about no one wearing masks, she shrugged her shoulders and said, "as long as we have what they want we don't judge what they wear". I know she can't do anything but just her uncaring nonchalance stuck with me. She had a sort of what's with you tone in her voice...Won't go back there until ever or certainly not until the covid is in decline....just my experience...

My ex really surprised me with that move. Shes usually very conscientious about things like the flu and washing hands and whatnot.

Glad that Kroger recently made it a requirement for their employees to wear masks. I didnt see any of them wearing masks when I visited one of their local stores almost two weeks ago.

It blew my mind that I had to drive elsewhere if I wanted to buy something after 6 pm, or whatever time that whole town seemed to shut down. (Not a bad idea for a pandemic, but that was long ago.)
A few interactions with neighbors let me know that I definitely didnt fit in.
Edit: Im okay with PPE too. Bought the hospital-type of blue disposable masks awhile ago. (I carefully put some of them in a ziplock bag and gave them to a sister whose homemade masks kept falling off her face.)

Since the beginning of the pandemic, I havent stepped foot in a large grocery store, Walmart or Target. I feel lucky to have a smallish neighborhood grocery store half a block from where I live. I visit it 4-6 times a week and just buy whatever I can carry home.
Those big stores just seem like a great way to spread the virus. If I need to go to one, Ill probably do it at like 3:00 in the morning.

(9,353 posts)My local post office was closed after they had 9 of 61 employees show up. We didnt have mail delivery for a week. I understand that in areas close by they havent had delivery in two weeks.
The post office on the other side was closed for over two weeks for cleaning. When I went in today there were new employees. Chose not to ask about the regulars. Also, big signs now saying that one must have both mask and gloves. Got surprised by the gloves and had to go back home to get some. Only had some questions but couldnt go in without proper protection.
The post office further uptown, that is the main one in the area, had no employees available and everyone had to use the machines. Im sure there was somebody in the back who opened the doors but did not choose to do face to face business.
They are having a tough time. You should appreciate every mail carrier you see!

They're for the protection of people around you.
I did have a good experience in this regard. At a small (two locations) bakery that we like the staff weren't wearing masks. I went three times, expecting them to get with the program. When they didn't I sent an e-mail, nice, but explaining how the masks weren't for them but for the customers and how they breathed on the cups and the food, etc., etc. The next day I got an e-mail saying masks would be mandatory for all employees at both locations. Yeah!!!

I'd say at least 90% are wearing masks, the checkers are wearing masks, and people are spacing.
We made a trip to Target the other day (my only non-Safeway trip since this started). I'd say 25% of the customers were wearing masks, which surprised me, and the majority of the non-mask wearers looked to be about 25-35 years old.
But as far as the Target store itself went, it was spectacular. When we walked in, the carts were all newly washed (by a woman with a mask and gloves, using a spray bottle of disinfectant) and they were all marks with a sign that said "Clean". When it came time to check out, there were clearly marked spots on the floor, but even better, they had a guy directing the shoppers where to go. He was like a traffic cop - he'd hold up his hand to prevent shoppers from going until he pointed them to a checker, and he wiped off every station first (this was important, because I had to touch the key pad). He answered my questions about the self-checkout from six feet away. He was masked, too. When we finished shopping, our cart went into a line of carts waiting to be cleaned. It was very systematic and easy, and I couldn't have been more impressed.

All of the workers were wearing masks (obviously purchased with their own money or homemade ) and marks on the floor, but no one monitoring the number of shoppers and people just ignoring distancing and floor markings. I was shopping for our household, plus my 78-year-old mom and her 76-year-old friend, so it was a lengthy trip. By the time I finished, my anxiety was through the roof.
I won't be going back. We'll make due with the mom and pop grocer, even if it means less selection, and shopping online (though we won't use Amazon because of how they're treating workers).

(51,642 posts)yesterday. At my store they have marks on the floor, plexi-glass, etc but when the cashier suddenly said, "Is he with you?" I looked up since I had been packing my bags and this big, older, white man was right next to me. I said "NO!" and she told him to step behind the line, which he did but he went on to bitch to the other big, older white man behind him (also not following the directions). The two loudly complained. I wanted to punch both of them. Instead I just glared over the top of my mask with TRUMP and a big red slash through it written on my mask with a BIG Sharpie. I have observed that it is white people complaining the most and mostly men, why is that? Do they feel like they can't get sick? Are they acting like "macho men"?

Both stores I went to had a dramatic drop in the number of people wearing masks compared to last week. Last Friday when I went out, pretty much everyone had a mask on. Today, maybe half. There was also a lot more traffic out, gas stations were packed and a bunch of people were hauling boats. I live about 15-20 minutes northwest of Detroit, for reference.

(67,782 posts)It's a store to be avoided these days.
At our supermarket, everyone that works there wears masks, but it annoys the crap out of me because half of them don't put them on correctly, they don't cover their noses! I guess working 8 hours it gets annoying, but it bothers me because they're supposed to be protecting us, too.
But it's a state mandate, all customers and workers have to wear masks now.
Our other supermarket is great - they have someone at the front door cleaning carts and baskets, and counting the number of customers (there's a limit now, although not a problem at this one) Everyone wears masks properly.
They have wipes inside the front door, too. I grab a couple as I'm leaving to clean my hands.

I called the attendant over and I asked why are you letting people gas up without a mask?
I was told that management said only the store is mandating masks, but not the gas pumps.
I told them that people are breathing, coughing, sneezing on the keypads and the gas nozzle,
why would that not possibly apply?
Their response is we can enforce it.
I called bull $h1t on that. I said "Sure you can. No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service. That has always applied. Now
we have to add No Mask. What's the big deal."
