Because all the REAL men and REAL patriots were carrying their weapons in battle against Nazis in Europe and the Japanese imperialists in the Pacific. During a real war, people suffered on the home front for years. Im not denying that too many people are having a hard time during this epidemic, but the thugs who are brandishing guns in the state capitals are not helping in the war against Covid19

Now we have a cabal of criminals looting the nation, following 40 years of anti-government propaganda starting in earnest with that evil old bastard raygun, + billionaire money hoarders shoving the country off the cliff to the right.

(46,362 posts)The more I read about FDR and what he DIDN'T do before the war, (he helped block anti-lynching laws,) and what he did during the war. (Locking up Japanese-Americans.)
It wasn't until after the war, when Truman desegregated the troops that actual Presidential action started the destruction of white supremacy.

(12,000 posts)I had to reply to someone in our local news forum who said it was a good thing FDR imprisoned Japanese Americans because it was for their own safety. I replied that in no stretch of the imagination would it be said that he was really doing them a favor

(5,803 posts)The New Deal policies that helped only a segment of the population should have included everyone, FDR should not have interned Japanese Americans, and he should have moved the nation forward to fight racism and discrimination.

(11,949 posts)The largest block of FDRs congressional support was Southern Democrats. Who at the time were the same Democrats who supported secession in 1860. If he pushed anything that helped African Americans at all they would have stonewalled. Because they took segregation more seriously than anything. Social Security is the perfect example. The only way he could get it thru was by exempting farm workers and domestic help. Guess what a vast majority of African Americans did for a living in the 30s. Especially in the South. So he comprised. But the alternative was no SS.
White Southerners loved all the big government programs which lifted the most impoverished region of the country out of third world conditions. Until the 60s. When another Democratic President, ironically a southerner, extended those benefits and more to people of color. Those southern democrats now make up the Republican Party in the south. As in the 30s they value their privileged place in society over a healthy society.
I give FDR a pass he played the hand he was dealt. Not saying he was a civil rights champion. But he initially wanted his program to cover everyone. He wife sure as hell did. And I type this as a 54 year old Southern White Male.
The internment of the Japanese Americans? No excuse for that. He did not need the support of Southern Democrats to keep it from happening.

(23,344 posts)that the party THEY VOTE FOR is the REASON so many working people are having a hard time right now!
THEIR party is the one that has FLATTENED WAGES for working people over the past forty years!
THEIR party is the one that has BLOCKED HEALTH CARE COVERAGE for working people over the past seventy years!
THEIR party is the one that has ROLLED BACK UNION RIGHTS and WORKER PROTECTIONS over the past forty years!
THEIR party is the one that has FATTENED corporate coffers over the past forty years! at THEIR expense.
They are protesting to the WRONG people! As Joy Reid, said this morning, "People who stand up to work all day are NOT the primary concern of the Mitch McConnells of the world."

(296 posts)I grew up with the privilege of the WWII generation as parents, uncles, neighbors-etc. The NATIONAL effort for that war extended all thru out society. Some farmers were exempt from service for food security, but lost all their help. One neighbor was famous for milking all his cows alone, twice a day, every day for 4 yrs with out a break. 16 hrs of dairying, every day for 4 yrs-wife was nurse-volunteered at vet recovery center every night. Consider the 'Blue Star/Gold Stars' in windows--I still remember these--Women in the work place, (Rosie the Riveter). Kids worked adult jobs before and after school, including things like steel mills and ship yards as young as 14. Railroad mechanics-often known as 'Bulls' came out of retirement, some in their 70's--damn old for the time. Merchant Marine--often using OLD men, formerly retired, along with kids as young as 15--awesome record. The point--our LEADERSHIP encouraged this effort--people wanted to help--EVERYONE felt the urgency, most felt the desire to do what one could, whatever that was. This IDIOT, Little Lord Tiny Hands, cares not for his countrymen, only for himself. This fight pits the 'Better Angels of our Nature' against the Natural Ugliness that Trump seems to be able to summon from his supporters. I don't fear the virus, or death from it if it happens, I fear for country to recover from the SICKNESS OF TRUMP.----------------sorry, long day

If a drunk or subversive wannabe was spouting Nazi crap around town they got a visit from a Jeep load of Army guys with guns.
My grandfather served in both world wars. Merchant Marine in WW1 and Navy in the Pacific in WW2. My father and grandfather never talked about their military service unlike a lot of braggarts out there these days.
You did your service, you kept your mouth shut. After the war's over you still kept your mouth shut. If you didn't you would likely be be called out for it.

(11,949 posts)They just went to the next one over. And like you said, high death toll.
Have you seen the PBS documentary on the 1918 pandemic? Someone posted a link last night. It went into this subject. October 1918 was horrendous. Like almost 200k Americans died in a population less than half of what we have now.
Mentioned on town in Utah that cut off all outside traffic. Except the mailman. Guess who brought it in? Scare times.
But that flu was more lethal than this virus by all apparent evidence. It killed those between 20-29 at the highest rate.
Have a nice evening.
