Carnival to resume some cruises on August 1

BY ALAIN SHERTER
MAY 4, 2020 / 4:56 PM / MONEYWATCH

Carnival Cruise Lines is already planning to set sail even as a federal order bars the crew on some of its ships from disembarking in the U.S. because of coronavirus concerns.

The embattled cruise operator said Monday that it will resume service on its North Americans lines on August 1. Starting August 1, a total of eight Carnival ships will operate from three U.S. cities, the company said:

• Galveston, Texas: Carnival Dream, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista
• Miami: Carnival Horizon, Carnival Magic, Carnival Sensation
• Port Canaveral, Florida: Carnival Breeze, Carnival Elation.

The eight ships are scheduled to make stops in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Mexico, among other places. All of Carnival's other North American and Australian cruises are canceled through August 31.

"While cruises are often viewed as a care-free escape from reality where passengers can dine, dance, relax and mingle, we would hope that the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic will place a renewed emphasis on public health and passenger safety, but frankly that has not been seen up to this point," Representative Peter DeFazio, a Democrat from Oregon who is chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, wrote in a May 1 letter to Carnival CEO Arnold Donald.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Even if the government lets them sail, I don't see how Carnival can make this work.

I’d think those ships are going to be more than half-empty, after people have heard the story of the Diamond Princess, where a two-week cruise turned into a bonus two weeks of being quarantined in your cabin. There’s also the matter that, even if they manage to miraculously have no COVID-19 on board, how do they know that the countries on their itinerary will even let them dock? For all we know, those countries might be in a crisis situation with the virus themselves at that point.

stuck on the ship for months.

Since that possibility doesn’t appeal to me I probably will not go on a cruise.

I would imagine there are a lot of people who feel the same as me.

On second thought, I'm sure they can find a couple of thousand people willing to risk death for a chocolate buffet.

...the governor says it's too soon to rule out school come next term. And they're being extremely cautious in the approach.
In a daily briefing he said he'd like to able to do that, but it's way too soon to predict either way.

I'd take the cruise if it was me, my wife, our pets, and they'd dock wherever I wanted as quickly as they could get there.
It would be like being super rich for a week.
I'd never go on a cruise otherwise, pandemic or not!

The mega-ships that carry five or eight thousand people do.

The only two cruises I've taken have been on Holland America, whose ships typically have a capacity of 2,000 or fewer people.

Heck I was on a cruise March 1 to March 18 to Hawaii, and we all felt vastly safer on board than after we got off.

launch a cruise. I see no chance these are going to be profitable. They would be better off keeping these ships docked and minimizing expenses until they can fill a ship.
