BRUNSWICK, Ga. A Glynn County grand jury investigating a scandal involving a former police officer who allegedly had sex with a confidential informant has indicted four current or former police officers, including current Glynn County Police Chief John Powell.
Arrest warrants were issued Thursday for Powell, current Vidalia Police Chief Brian Scott, and former Glynn County police Officers David Haney and David Hassler, according to Mark Spaulding, of the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorneys Office.
The jury found enough evidence to justify 20 charges, including violation of oath, attempt to commit a felony, influencing a witness, perjury and making false statements to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, according to court documents.

(14,971 posts)Arberys mother, Wanda Cooper, told CNN that when she was notified of her sons death, police told her he took part in a burglary and that there was a confrontation between her son and the homeowner and a struggle over a gun.
There have been no charges against the suspects, identified as former police officer Gregory McMichael and his son Travis. The men told police they believed Arbery had been involved in a neighborhood burglary.
No one disputes that McMichael, son of Brunswick District Attorneys Office investigator Greg McMichael, shot and killed Arbery, but he was not immediately charged because Travis McMichael claimed he was acting within the scope of a citizens arrest, News4Jax.com reported.

NBC said Arbery was an ex- football player who jogged every day. These guys saw a Black man running through their neighborhood and decided to shoot him.

Horror and hot anger yesterday on first seeing that awful video I could barely watch through my fingers... today is just a tangle of emotions. I can't imagine the anguish Ahmaud Arbery's mother has been dealing with. That no one has even been charged in two months is absolutely unacceptable.

Good grief, that's so disturbing in this day and age.
I had some black coworkers in the past who seemed scared to venture out in the wilderness or rural areas, and now I wonder if this kind of crap explains it. Fewer witnesses out there, whereas I feel safe to camp in the middle of nowhere. (More comfortable than being in a big city, in fact.)

(2,787 posts)I've seen no evidence of a burglary. The shooting did not occur on private property and even if there was a burglary the according to the context the shooters were not the ones who's home would've be allegedly broken into. They had no business pursuing this man and absolutely no business shooting him.

(36,371 posts)"Travis McMichael pulled up beside Arbery and again made it known they wanted to talk, the report said. At this point, Travis McMichael exited the vehicle, shotgun in hand.
McMichael stated he saw (Arbery) begin to violently attack Travis and the two men then started fighting over the shotgun, at which point Travis fired a shot and then a second later there was a second shot, the report stated. McMichael stated the male fell face down on the pavement with his hand under his body."

(38,498 posts)This thread is about the killing of a black man.
Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)You posted the dashcam. If you didn't want it being discussed, perhaps you shouldn't have posted it.
Apparently the person making the video was - at best - duped by the murderers or - at worst - an accomplice. That's precisely the reason I asked the question. From the wobbles, it looked to me like a phone video - not a dash cam. People don't generally wander around on relatively deserted roads randomly taking videos of the drive - so it seems odd to me that the video existed at all.

(15,512 posts)You can tell because it is vertical (dash cams are normal, which is horizontal), and not steady (even when the car is stopped).

(34,117 posts)Most of us don't drive around randomly filming a pretty boring drive. So when someone randomly filming just happens to capture a murder on video, it is pretty darn logical to wonder what prompted them to video it in the first place.
Bettie
(16,133 posts)the driver got a look at the two guys jumping in the truck with guns and followed to see what they were up to.
Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)But another response suggests something more sinister (that has apparently been reported on) - potential involvement by the person doing the video-taping (either relatively innocently - helping neighbors, or as an accomplice).
Bettie
(16,133 posts)and it makes me sick to think about this. It makes it seem like this guy was targeted and they planned it.
Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)especially if the man doing the videotaping believed that he was helping catch a burglar - is that it has taken months for this videotape to appear.
It is very obvious from that video that the man is just a jogger, so when you come up onto what is clearly an execution scene you turn the evidence in to the police immediately.
Bettie
(16,133 posts)involved in some way or knew that they were going to do it.
All the joggers I know are creatures of habit, so they tend to have a couple of routes they do regularly. So, this was probably not the first time he was jogging there. I think they were watching for him and planned this. Just my opinion.
Mister Ed
(5,945 posts)From the New York Times article at
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/us/ahmaud-arbery-killing-georgia.htm
So, it appears that the videographer was, at best, a neighbor who believed the murderers when they told him they were chasing a burglar, and, at worst, an accomplice to the murder.
Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)That is actually what I expected - that something (possibly being an accomplice) prompted the making of the video tape.
