Not usually a good idea to take a captured mercenary’s statement at face value when he probably has a gun pointed at his head.

The 'Silvercorp' company did some security work for Trump rallies, and its head Goudreau met at least once with Kurt Schiller, a long-time Trump aide and confidant, to pitch the proposal for a raid against Venezuela. Representatives of the Venezuelan opposition leader Guaido also met with Goudreau in this regard. This is all from reporting in mainstream sources in the United States. It is not enough to establish this was done at Trump's behest, certainly, but enough to make the claim it was plausible. It is also enough to legitimately arrest Guaido over.
