As a Minnesotan, I don't get the backlash against face coverings

It's -20 half the year here. You get socks and a ski mask for Christmas as a kid from Grandma.

I threw this up on Facebook to poke a couple high school friends who were posting anti-mask memes. It got the desired effect

A Brief History of Wearing Masks in Minnesota

By Nicholas Blonigen

November 2019: It's deer season. Time to put on a facemask and sit in a deer stand for hours.
December 2019: The lakes have frozen over and the crappies are biting. Time to put on a cozy ski mask and sit on a bucket for hours.
January 2020: Trails look good. Time to put on this facemask AND this helmet and ride the snowmobile for hours.
April 2020: I have to wear a thin piece of cotton over my face for 30 minutes inside Menards? Oh my God, I can't breath! I'm going hypoxic! I'm going to DIE!!!!!!!! This is fascism!

It symbolizes so much, that Trump has FAILED to provide enough PPE, that he has lied to us constantly, that he is in control.

People around here have been doing extra stupid crap in masks, as if they’re magical objects. Distancing? What’s that?

Also, masks are a distinct problem for people with glasses. Which is a minor point next to the way people wearing masks are behaving here.

Most masks are not fitted, so when you exhale it fogs your glasses - just weave a 22 gauge wire in along the seam and bend it to shape the mask to your nose and the fog problem will be solved.

(Yes, I wear glasses.)

ETA: The problem is not the mask - it is that the majority of homemade masks I see aren't well-made.

Truer words were never uttered. However, there are many people who do not peek out in the winter. They run to their pre-started cars, drive to a destination and then run into a heated building. I have always loved winter and was a winter sports enthusiast to the max. Have had to give up most winter activities, but I still have my ski masks which I carry in my car along with a snowmobile suit! I now own 6 masks to fight COVID-19. I don't see the threat in wearing a mask to protect others, but I was taught to care about others and their well-being.

I don't get the "rebellion" either.
It's outrage in search of an actual issue.
Besides, just like one's own home, their building, their rules. What's the issue?

Here in my town (depends heavily on tourism, although not now!) and with more than 50% over the age of 60, a recent survey showed that just over 25% wear masks when going to essential businesses (post office, grocery, pharmacy, liquor stores). However, over 90% say they are practicing physical distancing -- and I have never observed anyone not doing so.

We Canucks are not a rebellious lot; we believe in peace, order and good government, as well as sharing with those less fortunate -- hence universal healthcare.

I have 4 masks which get changed and washed every time I need to use them. It's great! No need for makeup, and I wear my sunglasses and a hat, so no one knows who I am.

Perhaps not wearing a mask is equivalent to toting the penis-extending assault weapon?

In our small city, I'm surprised at the high % of folks wearing masks.
Has to be around 80%.
Less resistance here, especially among folks in our age group.

The separate the believers from the non-believers. Not wearing a mask shows that you are loyal to Trump, and therefore to the United States. Being without a mask shows that you are "not afraid" of a virus, wearing a mask shows that you are too weak to risk you life for the sake of the economy.

Going out in public without a mask says, "I believe in Trump, not science." Trump doesn't wear a mask, Pence doesn't wear a mask, the doctors on the briefing don't wear a mask, why should I wear a mask? Masks reduce the amount of oxygen you get, so it is harmful to your heath. Masks make me look funny. My friends don't wear masks and they haven't got the virus. People get the flu every year and they don't wear masks.

1. Where the Twin-cities are located. Why are they so close--in Minnesota you huddle together for warmth. 2. What is the 'Great Northern Accent'--talking with your mouth ALMOST closed because it's so DAMN COLD. (Wisconsin accent is Minnesota accent after a few beers) 3. Duluth, Minn.--home of JENO's--Jeno's FROZEN pizza. (did we mention FROZEN) 4. Why did Prince wear so many furs and scarves--He was from Minnesota 5. Minnesota--Cows, Cold, Frozen Lakes, DEEP Snow, but it's still BETTER THAN IOWA.

the cold hurts my face! So it was good to have something to cover up. Plenty of people wore a balaclava or thermal underwear.

When I lived in Indiana before that, my apartment was so terribly constructed that the cold winter air came right through. So when I moved to Minnesota I made sure to scope out an apartment that looked like it could hold up to winter wind.

borne of discipline. If they want the economy to open up they would be all for prevention and the wearing of face masks.
