House Democrats want the next round of coronavirus aid to include a massive bailout of the U.S. Postal Service, which has, for years, experienced declining revenue exacerbated further by the coronavirus epidemic.
But Republicans and President Trump want significant reforms implemented before providing new funding.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters shell include a $25 billion bailout of the postal service in a massive economic aid package that is likely to top $1 trillion.
"We have to fight for the Postal Service," Pelosi said this week. "And people across the country are all tweeting and writing to me and stuff like that, saying we really protect our post office."

(13,874 posts)The Democrats should put it in the House bill and state unequivocally that they will not accept any Conference Committee bill that does not contain the funding with no radical conditions attached.
There is no way the Senate is going to let that die and force the Post Office to shut down a month or so before the election. For one thing, as fragile as the economy is, the news that the PO will be shutting down would likely trigger a huge stock market decline, since a significant number of Americans still receive and pay their bills through the mail. And millions of dollars of obnoxious political mailers would have to trashed.
Tell the Republicans that we are OK going into the election with the GOP identified as the group that killed the Postal Service.
Force them to back down.

(11,395 posts)and this would help .. but the Post Office has more issues than just this one. Republicans are no friends of the USPS (everything except the military would be better privatized .. including your public schools) .. but the bulk of it's troubles lie in new economic and business models usured in with the internet.

(13,874 posts)If it became a mainstream issue, with news stories that Amazon, UPS and FedEx would begin delivering your mail, and the cost of a letter would only triple (except in rural areas where it might need to be 10 times higher than now), I don't think the GOP would hold out long against 80% voter disapproval and doomsday scenarios from many large companies that rely on the PO.

(13,874 posts)so he wants to raise the cost Amazon pays to have the PO do the final leg of most of their deliveries. Remember that Bezos also owns the Washington Post.
His stated reason is that the deal the PO has with UPS, FedEx and Amazon is bad, and he has publicly said that they must quadruple their rates to those providers. The PO and all independent analysts say that the deals are good and saves money for both sides.
